This months competition is good. I think that the themes should be a little easier than previous ones. If that makes any sense :/ |
Come up with some suggestions and we'll include them. So far there have been 2 suggestions submitted. Remember that we have members from across the globe, so the themes must be possible in their countries. We try to avoid themes that only certain people can do ie Beach as people living in Birmingham for example are no where near a beach.
TBH most of the themes are easily doable. Some might take a bit more thought than just taking a picture of a car, but that's part of the challenge.

We're considering relaxing the competition rules to allow slight editing to the image submitted, but no editing to the actual car. Now I've typed that, it doesn't make sense, but it is early, so let me explain.
At the moment, the submissions are just a single photograph
that wouldn't change. it would still need to contain an unedited, recognisable image of your car, but you would be free to exhibit that image in a more creative way by adding borders or putting multiple images into one picture, as long as the main image is a decent size to be visible.
A couple of examples I have knocked together
Obviously we don't want the photoshopped cars (anyone remember the red trees?)
Just throwing it out for ideas to try and get people to be more creative and encourage them to enter and give the competition a new lease of life. One thing to consider is that all pictures for the home page get shrunk down to 570 pixels wide, so it would be pointless having half a dozen pictures side by side as they would only be a few pixels high to avoid distortion.
May run a one off competition in the next few weeks for the photoshoppers who want to show their skills and modify their car to their hearts content.
Thoughts?

I think a certain level of editing would be fun. I don't mean adding parts to your car/ lowering ect just light edits to compensate for s**t cameras or enhancements.
If I had my SLR here I could make an image look 10x better than just re-size and upload but keep it looking realistic.
For example;
The original image was shot in a rush and looked washed out. The paint in real life was as red and vibrant as what you see there, however due to lighting and my lazyness I had to slightly enhance the photo to give a true illustration of what you get when looking through your eyes and not a lens.
Same with this picture;
That is exactly how they look/looked in person.
The key is to know when to stop enhancing. Obviously you'll get people who will use HDR converters and over sharpen pictures which then makes things look unrealistic and s**t. I often sit on DW and the amount of people that HDR a picture to bring certain details out to a ridiculous level irritates me.
A light enhancement to a picture isn't cheating if it is true. The only reason you cannot see stone chips is because of lighting and reflections. Also a miss conception is people think you edit the picture to make a car shinnier. It's not making it any more shiny than real life, sharpening as long as not too much gives a better perspective.
My car in real life is as shinny as my pictures when it's clean (which is 90 % of the time).
Borders imo look s**t, but multi pics together look good.

I'm with you on that one mind. Photo's look so much clearer and the colours are much vibrant on an SLR camera, it's not hard to tell. Having done Photography whilst in college I have had sufficient experience with them, so I agree, that small light enhancements that make the car look like it's right in front of you, isn't cheating. Just simply giving the car a real life perspective. By the way Jamie, love your car mate!

Put it in and let the voters decide. Quirky might just be the boost the comp needs and then others think might outside the box.

You should do the whole car in the same wrap as the tailgate. People would be all over it thinking it's some sort of prototype on test.

I know, it's a complete b***h to keep on the road. Working on it 24/7. Still, all the effort is worth it to keep an un-bastardised 206, that has only had one advisory (minor post CAT leak) in the last 4 MOTs, on the road.
Your car looks quite impressive though.
Be careful not to crash it otherwise mummy might stop your pocket money and send you to bed without your glass of milk

Is there any point anyone else entering? It will take a good pic to steal my vote away from Frenchfrog40

In this PC world, do suppliers still give "glamour" calenders out to garages? I remember we used to get some good ones through.
