The car noob is back with another probably stupid question lol. I was with my mate tonight and he has a 1.4 Fiesta. He showed me his K&N cone filter and said the noise difference, plus the increase in power and fuel economy, was really noticeable. I said about how the 1.1 just has a panel one and he suggested cutting the tube from the throttle body to the filter and it's casing, removing the latter and putting a cone filter into the remaining pipe.
Is this possible, is it sensible, will it do what he says and does it have to be K&N to make a big difference?

Firstly you don't need to cut anything I believe, for example; the K&N 57i induction kit which is more then likely the one your be looking at (see here: www.amazon.co.uk/57i-I...003K3L5DA) comes with all the fittings and clips you will need to fit it.
You would simply just disconnect from the throttle body and remove the air box leaving the air feed pipes in place (as your still wanting a cool air supply to the cone and fit the 57i as instructed.
Now lets be a little realistic, you drive a 1.1.. there is nothing wrong with this, but in my opinion it's a waste of time fitting a cone filter or a panel filter for that matter. You have to remember it's a 1.1, it's never going to be quick, and will there be any noticeable gains.. no in fact more then likely the opposite as your new cone filter will be sucking in more hot air then cold from the engine bay decreasing performance.
If you are dead set on having one then I would recommend looking at relocating the cone itself where it would be more efficient, but that's a whole different kettle of fish and other factors have to be taken in to account like smooth undisrupted air flow ect ect.
Please don't let me put you off though, it is your car, you can do whatever the hell you like to it, you can spends thousands of pounds on trying to make it quick, but it'll always be a 1.1 at the end of the day.. for what my 2 cents are worth, invest in keeping your car clean and looking good with styling modifications, but as always it's your car and your money, do what you like with it

It's a 1.1 but I want it to sound like a 2 litre lol. In your opinion then, keeping cost effectiveness in mind and removing all 'how chavvy' etc. barriers from your mind mate, what do you think would be best?

Honestly.. and even with barriers removed I would suggest get a panel filter instead, provides a slight increase in air flow & performance (debatable) and will make it sound a little better but dont expect it to sound like a cone filter because it wont.. and invest in a decent back box that provides a nicer rumble.

Just to throw this back up, I've spotted this. The reviews are insane and it's a 10er.

Say I took my panel filter out completely. Would I be able to just clip this into the tube? Or do I need some sort of adapter? If it's much more hassle than unscrewing the panel filter housing screws, loosening the metal brace on the tube, lifting the whole box and panel filter out and sticking this in its place then I can't be ars*d! Lol.

If you mean leaving the air box itself in place just removing the panel and sticking this into the tube the runs into the box then my guess would be you would need a tapered piece of pipe to fit over the cone connection itself but one that runs in to the tube coming off the throttle body, you could possibly force it, can't confirm for sure and may not be very sturdy.
Another issue you will properly have though is the cone stick up past the air box lid meaning you'd have to leave it off and leave it open to suck in all that warm air from the bay.

Trust me when I say this, do not get that air filter. I had a very similar one for a Tenner and although it sounded nice, made my car no end slower due to the hot air coming in. Unless you've got a substantial amount of piping to locate the filter right where cold air comes in, then don't do it. I've tried 3 or 4 air filters but I've now just decided to stick with my standard box purely for performance.
If you fancy a good filter, get a £40-£50 one. Not one like that - It's obviously up to you but I can guaruntee you'll regret purchasing that.

How much of a difference noise wise would a panel filter make?
Realistically I just want something that will make a nice noise on the cheap, but I don't want my car losing even more of its already low performance stats.

you can drill the air box to make a lttle more noise after you get the pannel filter

Still debating this as that £10 price tag and guarantee of a good meaty sound is really luring me in... If the cone was just put in where the airbox is now (obviously in its place) realistically how much power and mpg am I expecting to lose? My mate, who is a mechanic at Ford, has one on his 1.25 Fiesta and says he's noticed a slight improvement in economy, no difference in performance but a lot of difference in sound - as long as it is positioned right. He's also offered to help me fit it correctly... What do you think?
