Hoping someone can help me with this, I got in the car this evening and the car refuses to start. It will turn over once and then the abs and seatbelt light come on along with the handbrake and battery symbol. It was working fine yesterday. Another thing I noticed was that the clock had reset to 0:00 and that when I first tried to start the car, the headlights would flash before the lights on the dashboard show up. There seems to be some sort of clicking noise coming from behind the speedo too before the warning lights come on.

A bit of an update, i've checked the earth strap. There are two cables going from the negative terminal, one to the gearbox and one to what I believe to be another part of metal. Both are secure and seem fine. I've also reset the bsi and it did not help. I haven't tried another battery yet as I have to purchase another one which will have to be done during the week. I'll be checking the fuses under the bonnet and was wondering if I need to disconnect the battery before I check them?

The car was fine yesterday, in a matter of hours this problem occurs. Everytime I try to start the car I also hear a bong noise from the dash. My guess is if the fuses are ok, it must be a bsi related issue. Guess it was bound to happen with a car this old.

I have another theory, I braked with my left foot yesterday (don't ask why) and the car stopped immediately as my left leg is used to pressing the clutch pedal with quite a bit of force. I think that this has triggered the fuel to be cut off as the car thinks that it has been in an accident. The fact that the airbag light stays on gives the theory a bit of credibility. Unfortunately I don't have the fuel cut-off inertia switch on my pug.

Noticable sounds of a knackered or flat battery is the bong bong noise.

Your battery is dead, don't keep starting it,as this will cause problems to the BSI,ECU,and the Speedo needles will die, usually the temp. gauge, and all of this confirmed by the bong,so replace the battery ASAP,and don't keep suggesting things that cause this, you made this thread so we can help you,not to help us,we are here to help you,and by doing what we say this can happen, but if you keep say this or that, your will stay still.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. I totally understand Timon and will definitely act upon the advice given by everyone on here. Will get a new battery this week and report back hopefully with good news. Is there any type of battery in particular I should purchase?
