Ok a little background first. I brought a 206gti 180 around 2 months ago. I got it on a deal knowing it needs disks and maybe a cambelt (though I was assured it had been done)
It turned out I need dismays and pads all round, wishbone, tensions rods, CVboot and a cambelt.
I got a pretty discount on parts and went to a recommended garage. I gave then the job list and he quoted me £250 all in for the work and it would take 5 days til I got it back.
They have had the car over 5 weeks now.
Last week they test drove it after fitting everything, they told me it was leaking water somewhere. Today I have been told that the plastic water pump housing is cracked, and it had been glued but now was cracked again and thy want 4 hours labour and £70 for the parts to put right.
2 questions:
What would you do?
Is I possible to safely glue the water pump housing? (I drove over 100 miles on the motorway at speed without issue, I'm wondering if the garage cracked it?)
Please offer help I am screwing right now!

its not that easy to change the waterpump on a 180 tbh did they not change it when they done the cambelt????
i'm sure it cost around 50 quid for my waterpump from a main dealer and yes i would say it would take around 4 hrs to fit as the cambelt and everything will have to come off again.

Its good engineering practice to change the water pump when you fit a timing belt kit to a 2nd hand car that is new to you.
Why didn't the garage suggest the water pump replacement BEFORE they took on the timing belt job?

To confirm; they did the cambelt AND water pump, they are claiming that the houseing was glued together which cracked when they out the new pump on, and now want to charge me again to strip it back and change the water pump housing

if it was cracked and been glued why did they fit it then. sounds to me like they have over tightend it and cracked it themselfs. if the parts you gave them were brand new then its either a product manafactures faults IE: had a crack in from manafactures or garage fault. i would lean more towards garages fault but things do sometimes have faults from new.
i would be inclined to speak to the citizens advice bureau and see if you can clame back from the manafacture if its proven that the part is at fault and also ask them where you stand if the garage is at fault.

What they are saying is that the housing that the water pump bolts to was cracked when I have it them and that it had been glued to stop it leaking, then when they changed the pump and bolted it back together, it split the glue in the crack. Is gluing it a viable fix or is this lies?

no glueing is not a option as it will respilt open at some point later on and you will then have to strip it all down again it needs a new houseing.

I'm stuck, I have paid for a whole new cambelt and pump, disks and pads , now they want another £230 to get it back. I'm don't know what the housing looks like, but would it be a safe assumption to make that it would be obvious looking at it to see if it was glued or just cracked

With regards to the water pump, my brother had the same problem with it leaking water after he had it and the cambelt changed. Took it to a different garage to get it sorted and they told him that they did the bolt up on the casing too tight which caused it to crack and leak water, they undone it slightly and it stopped the leak.
They probably felt that you were happy for them to do the car when they had free time if they've had it 5 weeks. Personally I would refuse to pay them for a part they replaced as they could be just saying the casing was cracked to get out of paying for a new one. If the leak isn't too bad I would pay them for what they've done and take it to another garage to get a second opinion

Got to agree with Matty, get a second opinion. The fact they've taken the p**s already keeping your car for over 5 weeks is a joke and just goes to show there a bunch of spanner wielding sloth's. See if your second opinion could determine the cause of leak.

Ok so here is my decision. I am going in the morning to see the car, I am going to ask to see the crack and the glue. If I cannot see evidence of glue or that any attempt has been made to repair it, I.e. It just looks cracked, then I will tell him that either he repairs it, not Bodges but actually repairs it, or I will take it away, get another mechanic to repair it and if their report states it is cracked due to over tightening then I will tell him I am claiming the cost of the other mechanic back off him.
Does that seem sensible? Obviously if the crack has been bodged and sold to me like that I have to pay it.

Seems the like best option to me. Even if it has been bodged in the past I wouldn't bother letting these guys take anymore of your money for taking 5 weeks to do everything else.

What made you wait 5 weeks though? Surely you where questioning what they where doing after the initial estimation?

They are a local garage, I went in every few days to be told it should be on the ramp tomorrow , or there is a breakdown in. I'm not a fan of confrontation, but tomorrow will be different, I'm p**sed now
