Before anyone says the obvious, yes I know this can be a number of things and for foolproof solution need to get codes read. Car due for MOT at end of month and was hoping it would last that long as same garage does diagnostics so was going to get it sorted same time.
However, today on way home from work (8 miles'ish) car was fine to start, then had to stop at shop after about 2 miles, and it suddenly started revving silly on idle. Switched off, when I started again, it was holding back, almost like "limp mode" but if I kept gas on when it hesitated at around 2000 revs, it cleared and would speed up and drive as normal. Every time I slowed or changed down for traffic, junctions etc, got the same hold-back on the revs in 1st and 2nd, and sudden "kick in the backside" as it cleared and picked up.
Just wondered if this could be an indicator of the antipollution fault cause, as have seen Accelerator Position Sensor as a possible cause of this.
As I said, I know it needs a code read, and will get this done asap, but wondering if anyone had anything similar.

Blocked cat, give it a good run high revs low geers, around town or a long stretch of road, failing that buy some cleaner, air inlet (spray can), or fluid type in diesel tank, if it sorts it anti polution will go.
Air inlet spray is best watch all the crap come out.
Is your exhaust tailpipe all sooty as well.

Thanks both.
I've just run some BG244 fuel additive through it. Last owner (4 years ago around 80K) had a new Cat fitted for MOT just before I bought it as it had hole it in. Car now around 114K. How long is a Cat supposed to last? I did a high revs, low gear "Italian tune" last week when the antipollution fault first showed.
I have it booked in next Wednesday now for a code read, so hopefully get an answer then.
