Hi folks, hope someone can shed some light on this problem.
I was doing 50mph, and then a knocking, like duga, duga, duga ( yeah I know) started coming from the rear of the car. At lower or higher speeds the noise goes away. Also going over potholes or bumps in the raod the car feels like it's hitting harder than before.
Anyone know what this is?

I would do the following:
Check wheel bolts still tight
Check spare wheel cage is nice and tight.
Jack the rear of the car up grab the wheel at the sides and shake the wheel feeling for any play, then do the same for top and bottom. If you can feel play get someone to do it while you watch for where the play is.
If no play then have a look at the shock absorber or signs of failure (fluid filled will be wet with oil). Get a lever bar underneath the wheel and the floor and pull up on the lever moving the wheel up and check for movement (wants to be nice and smooth with no sudden movement either when moving up or down.
Check the rear axle mounting bushes for excessive movement when doing the above checks.
Try them for now and let us know how you get on.

The obvious is a very soft or flat tyre.
Or a soft tyre with bulge in the side wall.

first thing I did was chaeck the tyres, not them. I'll start checking tomorrow, cheers.

So its .. probably . Exhaust hitting torsion bar or rear shock or the BEARINGS have gone in the axle & it goes duga duga duga .

Take the rear wheels off and check the bolt in the anti-roll bar end plate, its a 13mm head I think, I get these come loose all the time on the rally car and it makes a "kerplunk" sound over bumps

Took it to Halfords, it's knackered. It needs a new rear axle. Balls.
I'm guessing it's daft to drive it?

I am not sure I would use Halfords to diagnose anything but a rear axle is quite hard to get wrong.
I have seen the rear axles in very poor condition and still being driven but I could not recommend that.
What car is it and where do you live. There are a few places that sell fully reconditioned axles and if you are near a member here who is prepared to do the work for you (probably that will be much cheaper than a garage or Halfords) the full job may be cheaper than you think. More and more the cost of an axle is beginning to mean people deciding to scrap the car though that does depend on exactly what model, what age and condition of the car.

I have a 2005 1.4S 206. It's in decent condition apart from this.

Lol Classic getting an Axle fitted at Halfords! Especially as Im picturing it being one of those halfords at retail parks that sell bicycles etc, great! I wouldn't trust them to fit a light bulb!

There was no way Halfords were ever going to do the job. It was a Saturday. Usual guy I use was not open, and at least they could tell me if it was dangerous or not.
