Morning everyone. I am somewhat up a creek without a paddle and need help, I've checked Google and as many forums as I can to no joy.
So first of all my car is a 53 plate 2 litre hdi 206 SW.
It's done a 108000miles and until now has given me absolutely no problems at all, I've had the car a little over a year.
Anyway, 3 days ago the battery light came on and obviously the car lost a lot of electrical power, blowers slow, horn sounded like a moist fart, cd went of when flashed headlights so yeah, it's pretty pants.
Anyway my initial thought was alternator had randomly given up so I bought another one, exactly same from a local breaker yard. Fitted that and still battery light on and when battery eventually runs out of power te car cuts out.
Could it be possible there's something like a relay or a corroded wore somewhere? If so where? I've checked engine fuse box and connections to and from alternator and they're all fine, I don't really want to start ripping things out that I dnot need to.
I'm not so clued up on electrical so it's pretty much a grey area for me.
I also have a spare 51 plate 206 2 litre on my drive so if I can use any fuses etc off that let me know.

More than likely battery is knackered. Cold weather usually finishes them off.

I agree with Steve206. When the battery does go, you usually get a host of other problems. But getting a new battery should fix things.

You normally get airbag warning and handbrake on, etc befiore the battery completely goes, had these symptoms on my previous 2 batterys on the car, never had battery light come on.
Maybe your battery earth straps, loose or need cleaning up, engine, gearbox, side side of things.
Or better still loan a good battery from someone before buying, and see if the symptoms go.

Note: a loan battery doesn't need to be identical to yours just make sure it isn't taller. Most will fit and a known good one, even different to yours, will be good enough for this short test.
Being 2.0 HDi diesel try to get one within 10% of your rated AH. Much smaller and you could get false indication.

Sorry I forgot to mention I had put a battery on from my other 206 which I knew was working and charging fine.
I have driven the car to work today (12miles) and battery light didn't come on but Lbvioualt this isn't problem solved due to not knowing what caused the problem in the first place. Still yet to find out if it gets me home this morning @ 1am!!

If it didn't come on after battery change I'd say you found the problem

onHmm I hope so, gonna get one of he electricians at work to check alternator and make sure it's cahrging before I get too excited.
On another note though is there a step by step guide to alternator change on here? I struggled like hell so might do one if there isn't already one, obviously there's still probably and easier way than the way I did it but I may help someone in the future

UPDATE!! Electrician at work voltmeter tested and results are as follows
Engine off power at battery 11.5volts
Engine running power at battery 11.5 volts
Engine 1500rpm 11.5volts
Lights, rear heated screen, heaters on 11.5 volts
Says me alternator knackered, I know it WAS working on donor car the day I removed it......
So now I'm back to square one, put battery back on charge at work to get me home tonight and battery hasn't lost any charge.

Have you checked and cleaned all connections between alternator and battery as well as the earths including gearbox earth etc?
An absolutely static battery voltage is rather strange and even makes me query the results.
I would redo each of the checks and compare voltage across the battery terminals with voltage between the battery positive and a body earth point then between alternator output and body earth, alternator output and negative battery terminal and alternator output and alternator body.
That would indicate if you have a bad connection on the charge or earth side and give an indication where.

I'm taking car to electromec tomorrow morning hopefully and they're going to test my old alternator more for my peace of mind and also because if test says alternator positive it will be a case of finding to electrical issue itself.
I have just driven home tonight though and first drivers air bag light came on, the battery light, headlights then went dim and then stop light and handbrake light came on, it was brighter on my dash than my headlights, haha
Anyway I'll update after electromec.
