this morning there was a bit of a crunch as I went over a speed bump. I thought it sounded like the car bottoming out but I was going very slowly.

Shortly after a grinding sound developed which has got progressively worse.

It only happens when moving and is still present when the clutch is fully pressed.

Its a 206 2005 GTI.

Is this some sort of bearing issue?

Hi there,

I would look at the front springs, wouldn't be supprised if one has snapped. Check all suspension components if you're in there.

Regards, Richard.

Life would be easier with universal jointed arms and fingers sometimes

okay will try to do that shortly.
The car doesn't look or feel odd, but I've been crawling along since incase the wheel falls off!

Why would that cause a constant grinding sound?
A mechanic suggested it could be the breaks but again that seems odd.

I'm thinking CV joint or wheel bearings or something but totally guessing.

you were right. got it up on a jack and I could then see the spring has popped off and has hit the tyre.

The garage said don't drive it for obvious reasons, but cant fix it until later in the week Sad

I've never used the space saver spare before.
Will this give me more clearance at the back of the wheel so I can at least drive the 3 miles home without it catching on the tyre?

Am I at risk of anything if I remove the wheel and use the space saver e.g. could the spring fall ?

If your Tyre pops/blows because of it you'll damage your car but could also swerve in traffic so do drive it mate until its fixed.

Just for your safety and others!

As long as its just a strut change its not to expensive to be honest but get it done in pairs because if that side has gone the other may fail sooner than thought =[

But if its off why not get some new lowering springs and struts Razz

I got it towed in the end.

He thought I'd have got away with it on the space saver if I took it very easy , but you never know and could have risked the whole thing dropping and all sorts of issues.

206s aren't a great ride as it is! any lower or firmer I'll need a physio along for the ride.
