Hi all - used this site a lot over the last couple of years but never needed to post that often.
MY T Reg 206 1.4 Roland Garros just massively over heated on me. I had noticed the fan kicking in a lot more recently so checked the levels today as was due to travel down to me ma's. However the coolant bottle was totally empty. I topped this up and noticed that the inside of the bottom was extremely gunky. It had what looked like a white/cream gunk inside it.
About 4 miles from my house all you could hear was the sound of gurgling/flowing water and then the temp gague climbed drastically. In the 4 years of having this car it has never gone above 90! the dial might as well have been painted on.
I stopped and once it had a break I looked inside and the cap for the coolant tank needed retightening a tad, however the gunk/flith from inside is sprayed around some parts of the engine in places. I managed to nurse it back to my house by stopping and letting it cool.
Can anyone offer any advice or help? I know s**t all about cars. If you need other info just say, also nothing you could say would be patronising to me!

Mine suffered an overheat when someone didn't put the radiator hose back on properly, I can sympathise with you it's not a nice experience.
You want to go to a garage, get some compression tests done, and get them to put the emissions probe in the coolant tank to see if unburned fuel is migrating into the water jackets through the head gasket. When mine first overheated I had the head skimmed twice before deeming that the block was no use to man nor beast. But that would be a totally worse case scenario
I know this sound stupid but check your passengers side footwell carpet, is it damp? Sometimes coolant can leak out of the heater matrix

Sounds like the head gasket has gone. As Andrew said, compression and sniff tests at a garage would confirm.
Have you got any salad cream under the oil cap?
My TU3 had oil getting into the water. Took the expansion bottle off and cleaned it with non bio washing powder and plenty of boiling water. Flushed the coolant pipes through. Added a bottle of k-seal, renewed the coolant and haven't had a reoccurance for over 6 months since it was done. £10 and the car off the road for a couple of hours rather than £200 and no car for a couple of days.
Interesting enough, although may not be related, my emissions have dropped right down.

Will have a check on those then, thanks, the passenger side was insanely hot as I lent over to open the bonent and could feel the pipe under there glowing.
Now that the weather has been nicer and I've had the windows down there has been a stronger smell of petrol/oil coming from it so I had planned to get that checked in a couple of weeks when I was due to be off work as even I knew that wasn't right.

check the heater blows hot when the temp starts to go up.... this will check your system is bled properly
