Hi All,

Wanted to drain my gearbox oil this weekend, but after a poke around it seems it is a 6mm square drain plug (there is no socket sides to the plug).

Does this sound correct?
Any idea where I can get a 6mm square socket from?

Thanks,
Ben

I'm pretty sure mine is a 6mm inside but the bolt is larger so you can use either. I can't remember the size but it may have been 16/17/18

Don't know where my post went but he are the pictures again. Pretty sure it's 8mm square. Tools are available from Halfords or any decent accessory shop.

8mm square socket and dual sump/gearbox plug tool which you use with a 19mm spanner or socket

Ok, so its definately NOT 8mm lol.

I have an 8mm sump plug key, which fits my engine oil sump plug no bother... I've tried about 5 times now and it isn't going in the gearbox drain plug!

Went into Halfords this morning and all I could find was square keys starting from 8mm upwards!

I took a pic to make sure I'm not going mad, this is a square key isn't it?

I found it needed to be hammered in but it was an 8mm square. This was on a 2002 1.1 petrol. Halfords also sell a tapered black one i think, i've used that but the taper means it's hard to but big torque on it.

Or maybe buy an 8mm and shave a little bit off with a grinding wheel? Not ideal but it would work, i had trouble finding smaller than 8mm squares too, google kept suggesting alans.

Regards, Richard.

Done! The socket must have had a galvanising layer on so was a touch too big... small bit of filing and a hammer and it went in and knocked off fine.

Old oil was horrible, black and smelt burnt as hell.

A handy tip for sump drain square plug. If you've not got the proper square socket you can undo a door handle from your house and use the square metal bar that connects the door handles. I found that a perfect fit.
