Hi,
This may be a daft question so please dont laugh, but, if i hold the shaft (bar part) of a drive shaft should there be and side to side (lateral) movement in it?
I ask as im getting a squealing noise from the front diver wheel which initially sounded like brake pad squeal as noise goes once you brake. ive rules this out and now turning my thought to the drive shaft or possibly the wheel bearings.

A little movement is ok. It's got two flexible joints on it after all.

Grenpug2222 A bad drive shaft would knock and the CV (constant velocity) joints would click when you steer around junctions. As stated above there is a small amount of movement if you pull and push towards gear box however with the wheel locked still there should be no excess rotational play which would indicate worn out CV joint. Easy way to check a bad CV joint is to drive round a car park with full lock on slowly in circles in first gear. Try with a lock on in each direction and listen for clicking / knocking. If no noise then your CV joints are OK.
If you've definitely ruled out brake squealing then squealing or rumbling when wheels are in motion is quite possibly a worn wheel bearing, the noise will gradually get louder as the bearing wears out

Ok, I guess I've ruled out driveshaft too then as I get none of what you wrote whilst driving on full lock in a circle l.
Could a failing wheel bearing cause my squeal? And stop when applying brakes?

It is possible but I wouldn't like say for certain . Worn out wheel bearings can grind and make noise and change in sound depending on load placed on them such as acceleration and cornering.
