After writing off the first car and buying a very cheap and somewhat cheerful 206 I've had nothing but issues. Luckily they've all been small and I quite enjoy messing around with the car so that's not a huge issue.

Yesterday I noticed a slight squeak from the aux belt at medium revs (2-3000). I thought little of it as I was about to change the belts anyway. After parking up for about 20 minutes, I noticed a fairly hefty puddle of oil under the car. Checked the levels - all good.

I later discovered the aux belt had launched oil all over the underside of the bonnet so I figured it was power steering, drove home and left the car for a bit. I also arranged lifts to work for the rest of the week because it was only going to get worse.

Situation this morning was a horrendous noise from the power steering unit whenever you move the wheel. No fluid in the pump. As expected right?

I'm not good with power steering and don't really know what anything does. I've spotted a leak from the pump and I was hoping somebody could tell me what sort of seals or any potential issues might be?

 

It's mainly leaking from the lower of the two nuts. I have a spare pump but I'm reluctant to fit due to being somewhat useless with such matters.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well you can try buying a new O-ring,and fit it,go to your local Peugeot Dealer,and ask them for O-ring,it's Part number is (4006.30),and try fitting it and see how things goes,and make sure you add the right oil specification number so that you don't damage the power steering pump.

Thanks for your reply. I'll give them a call later. I've got a bunch of generic O-rings. Is it worth trying to fit one of hose or go straight to the dealer?

Also sorry for the stupid question but how do I know what oil to use?

You can always try to fit other O-rings,but it's better to get the same number so that you don't waste the oil again,the oil used is a yellow color one,same as the ATF one,but it's not red in any chance.

If you continue running the engine with low or no fluid in the PAS system you will destroy the pump.

I won't run the engine until it's sorted. Only going to make things more expensive if I do.

And the oil that was in the pump was some of the red stuff. That's also what halfrauds supplied me. Serves me right.

Convinced my lift to bring me to Peugeot on the way home yesterday, picked up the O-Ring: 76p.

On my arrival home I undid the top pipe on the PAS System, removed what was once an O-Ring, swapped in the new one and re-tightened. Filled and bled the system and now I've got smooth, buttery steering once more.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Both our peugeots have red atf fluid ... And we've had one since almost new and was serviced by Peugeot .. What's the problem?
Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

You are welcome,it's good to know that you got it sorted,why you didn't ask the dealer while you are there buying the O-ring,what fluid to use,and how much the 1 Liter costs?

My car is 2006 model,and I bought it back in 2008,and it got yellow ATF fluid in the PAS system,so I thought maybe all the 206 gotta have yellow and not red ATF,but I think it's related to the country specifications.

Okay turns out I haven't quite solved the issue yet... It was fine for a couple of weeks and yesterday I noticed a squeak from the aux belt again. Checked the PSF levels. Empty once more. Gonna check the situation out on my lunch break and see what's happened to my shiny new O-Ring. Any ideas in the meantime?

Update for anyone experiencing the same issue:

After the PAS Pump ate the second O Ring I looked into it more. The black plastic clamp that holds the pipe highlighted in my photo (slightly different in my car) Was broken and allowed the pipe to move freely. I figued this excess movement might be what causes the O rings to break all the time. I cable tied it shut for now until a new clamp arrives. There was a significant reduction in pipe movement and so far the system hasn't leaked a bit.

I'll keep posting here if the situation changes.
