Hi all,

I've picked up a cheap 138 ('03, 3dr, mux, 58k) and it appears to be leaking oil onto the drive. I will have a good lock tonight in the hope of finding it but are there any parts of the engine that are prone to leaking?

When you plant the throttle it tends to hesitate as well. Feels like what I would imagine a misfire would feel like but I have no experience with this. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

UPDATE: The oil smells suspiciously like petrol so I assume piston rings or head gasket have gone.

I also think the gearbox is the culprit of the oil leak due to the distinctive smell of old lathe.

EDIT: Oil seems to be leaking from passenger side of the gearbox.

Any suggestions would be marvellous.

Thanks

UPDATE 2: Another limp home today - Seems worse when cold. Also was given antipollution and catalytic converter fault. The cat was new 1 month ago.

not a huge amount of places for leaks on the passenger side of gearbox fortunately. i'd check the driveshaft seal first as its the most likely culprit

Narrowed it down to the driveshaft seal last night but thanks for your reply. Getting the cylinders pressure tested in the morning and hooking up the diagnostics. Could be the coil pack playing up and I hope it is because these faults are driving me insane.

G3 synchro to be replaced and a cv joint and then that leaves the mystery airbag fault and the engine issues.

Getting there slowly

Update:

Cylinders were all pressure tested and it's good news. Removed the idle control valve and EGR and gave them both a good clean.

Faults given were:

- Random cylinder misfire
- Misfire on cylinder 4
- Idle control valve short cicuit
- Driver's seat airbag

I've had them cleared and will hook it up to planet now I have my new laptop. Seems suspiciously like coilpack to me but will change sparks firt (although they seem in good condition). Anyone had any issues with bosch super 4s? They're the ones that are currently in there.

Also changed oil and filters while it was on the ramp. Level was quite low so hopefully it will stay topped up. Only visible leak was from passengre driveshaft seal.

That's the gearbox oil leaking there, don't change it until you've sorted in a new seal

Thanks for your reply. I was aware it was gearbox oil due to the smell. Sorry my wording is often far from perfect lol

Will be sorting the grinding through the gate of G3 while I'm down there. We also have a strange suspension/steering/transmission noise going on. It's sort of a clunk when you lift the clutch. Sometimes it happens when going over uneven road surface as well. I'd be tempted to say a CV joint but there was very little play in them so I'm now inclined to say otherwise?

Any ideas?

Anyone who's interested - The misfire was fixed by fitting a second hand coilpack (£15 from breakers). Unlocked so much more power! It's a genuine pleasure to drive now Smile

Suspension/Drive noise turned out to be a gearbox mount

Leak fixed with new driveshaft/gearbox seal

Grinding still there (Assuming synchro)

So still some work to do but it's stable in the mean time Smile

Got a similar misfire issue. Just out of curiosity where can I find the idle control valve and EGR? 138 engine also.
