bought a 04 plate 1.4 hdi a month ago, 80k miles on it. had it serviced seemed everything was fine. car has always run a little hot, i thought, since it ran at 90-100 or 80-85 when driving a bit slower.yesterday night on the highway i was pretty much topping it out when i noticed the temperature was red and stop sign flashing at me. i pulled over right away, engine stayed in hot for maybe 1 to 2 minutes. after 10 minutes the temperature was back to 90 but since that incident the engine has been running quite hot. its now regularly running at ~ 120 and if pushed it will get into red again. is this the head gasket?

Is there bubbles or Oil appearing in the header tank?

Is the cooling fan working?

Diesel run cooling then petrol & its rare for the cooling fan to cut in during normal driving.

Cooling fan wiring rotting out is a known weak point on the 206.

at what temperature do i check for bubbles? any temperature? do i literally open the cap to look or do i keep it closed? sorry for dumb questions

Take cap off, start and leave car running for 10 minutes or so. Generally once the engine is climbing up through the temperature.

Coolant is circulating, Do the heaters get hot? Temp sensor could be lying...had that before on a 2.0hdi. Would need to put on diagnostics to check though

Try the sensor first ... my 1.4hdi did that .. scared the sh*t out of me until I realised that the engine wasn't that hot ..

Realised it was the sensor when it started doing it before I'd even got out of the driveway!!!

Disconnect sensor, pull circlip out holding it in to housing, pull sensor and stick thumb over hole to minimise coolant loss, stuff new sensor back quickly, place clip, replace connector.

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

the heaters do blow hot air at me when i turn everything off. not sure its the sensor because it stays around 100-110 when driving normally and only starts overheating after 10 minutes of spirited driving

flush the coolant and make sure nothing is jammed in front the radiator.

left pipe coming from the radiator is slightly cooler if that matters. water level doesnt look like has gone down even though the needle has hit red 3 times now. i immediately turn it off every time, once the engine has been off for 10 minutes its back to ~110
