My 180 has had the common clutch judder/chatter for ages but last week it's decided it doesn't need 5th gear anymore. No nasty noises, it just disappeared! Still got 1-4 fine. Inspected the linkage/cables and all okay. Even makes the clink of selecting 5th, but just revs. Today it's started making a grinding noise when the clutch is engaged to the gearbox (Foot off) and disappears when clutch pedal pressed down. So it appears something nasty has happened inside the gearbox. I've recently just moved to Horbury in Yorkshire so was wondering if anyone can offer any advice of reputable Peugeot specialists in the Leeds/Wakefield area? Thanks

5th gear is normally the first to fail if the box runs low on oil.

Also the nut that secures 5th gear was known to come loose on some Peugeot / Citroen BE gear boxes - I don't remember the GTI 180 box being one of them.

If it is 5th gear at fault the gearbox end cover can be taken off quite easily for a quick inspection.

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for the slow reply. I've only just had the car fixed.

I checked the oil level by slowly undoing the filler nut. I had a small trickle of oil so did it back up. I didn't bother taking the end cover off as I wouldn't really know what I was looking at.

I researched and found a Peugeot specialist in Rotherham. Shaun at Tech2. He has had some good reviews on this forum. I had a new clutch kit fitted and the problem with 5th was that the nut that holds it onto the shaft had come loose so it was free wheeling around the shaft. He said it was unlikely the vibration from the clutch judder was the cause. He had only seen this happen once before now.

All came to a very reasonable £370. Top bloke, Will definitely be going back to him again in the future should I need to.
