Hey everyone I bought a used peugeot 206 HDI 2.0 with 110,000 miles a few weeks ago and drove it in heavy rain on the M1 the other day for a good hour. I noticed a distinct lack of power, it was a very nippy car before.

The engine runs completely fine, no stuttering or anything but it just revved slow to 3000rpm no matter what gear, the turbo was much quieter and that distinct kick you get at ~1700rpm was gone. There is no black smoke coming from the exhaust, no strange noises and no warning lights on the dash.

I then checked the airfilter on a hunch and noticed over half of it was completely soaked in water and there was water underneath the airfilter in the little tray. I have bought a new standard panel filter and and dried the tray as much as I could. This helped a tiny bit.

What I did then was disconnect the MAF sensor and just gave it a visual check, thinking water might have reached it. However it's the cleanest looking part, inside and out, apart from a thin film of oil on the metal plate on the inside of the MAF. I re fitted it and checked the surrounding air hoses for cracks and it seems much much better but still not quite there.

The turbo doesn't seem to spool up to full speed until about 2200rpm whereas before, after ~1700rpm, it sounded like it was turning at maximum speed and giving full power.

I'm also struggling to find pictures on how to extract the rest of the air intake, the tube that runs down from the airfilter box towards the driver side front wheel, I'm guessing there's a lot more water in there somewhere.

So should I just buy a new MAF sensor and give it a go? Does the ECU need time to 'readjust' to the normal conditions and I just need to be patient? I'm guessing the water soaked filter starved the engine of air and it tried to adjust itself or something. I just want my old power back Twisted Evil

Unplug the MAF sensor, see if the car goes a bit better and you know to replace.

If you do need to make sure its a Siemens VDO one.

Cleaning the MAF sensor worked for a few days but I still get the problem intermittently. Sometimes it pullsz sometimes it doesn't. However everytime I disconnect the MAF and clean it a bit it seems to work for a few days.

Fair to say it's a faulty MAF sensor?

Also how difficult is it to take out the part of the air intake going from filter to behind the driver side wheel? I need to check if it's not sealed properly.

Yes it definitely sounds like the MAF sensor is faulty if it is working intermittently.

As for the air filter intake it is easy enough to take the air filter housing out as it will have the same size torx bolts holding it in place that hold the air filter cover on to access the air filter element.
If you feel where the intake pipe runs behind the air filter housing it will either be a twist plastic fitting which is common on Peugeots or held on with a large jubilee clip/Peugeot metal clip.
The same will apply to the end of the intake pipe where it terminates - either twist fitting or jubilee clip/Peugeot metal clip so they are easy enough to disconnect.
The intake side - through the MAF will be held on either with a jubilee clip or a Peugeot metal clip so you will need to disconnect that side in order to remove the air filter housing.
Once both ends are disconnected and the torx bolt loosened it will pull out so you will be able to see the intake pipe better.

I used to have a 206 1.4 HDi and although the air intake ran to the front grille as opposed to yours which goes to the driver side wheel the connections are all common to Peugeot.

If the connections to the intake pipe are a twist fit and they have worn so that it isn't tight you can just tape them up with gafa tape as it is waterproof.
If they are help on with a clip and it's loose or worn then a new clip will be needed in order to ensure it's water tight again.
It may be that there is a split in the actual intake pipe somewhere along it so that it is letting in water which too can be just taped up with gafa tape as well unless you buy a new pipe.
