I have owned my 180 for just about a year now after running an 02 GTI for 3 year's.
Have done about 8000 miles in that time,averages around 35mpg with a one off best on a steady run to the south coast of 42mpg.
Work done on it;
Osf wheel bearing.
Osf cv joint
Both front tyres
Clutch
Water pump
Both front lowers arms and drop links
Spark plugs
Crank sensor
Cam sensor
Battery
Rear axle
Discs and pads all round
Exhaust repair
Door check strap
All wiper blades
Oil &filter
Gearbox oil
Aside from the wheel bearing I have done all the work myself,good job really as all that labour would far exceed the value of the car.
I gave my old gti to my mum & dad and that hasn't missed a beat all year and just flew thru its mot 
Would like to change the wheels to the 16 inch 5 spokes off a 307,the ride unless I'm on a smooth road is too harsh,hoping the slightly deeper profile tyres on the 16s will soften it a bit
It hasn't ever broken down,the occasional reluctance to start but always went eventually.
Annoying bits;seat belts getting wrapped around seat back levers and water dripping onto the back seat when opening the boot in the rain.
Best bits:engine,handling on smooth roads,seats.

This is a complete pain in the a**e for me too. 11 years of unwrapping my seat belt.

Another year has passed by,mileage now at 103k was at 83k when I bought it.
Reliability last year was better than 2016.
More new front wishbones,combination of cheapo ebay parts and an 6 mile stretch of really rough back roads on daily commute knocked them apart.
Tracking reset after the above.
New front discs and pads again.Fronts started to judder on braking,think the pads were too hard,when i took it apart they were barely worn.Fitted new discs and branded pads and the brakes were much more effective.Cheap ebay cr@p again.
Fitted a K&n air filter,no discernible difference to anything;Performance or mpg.Just slight increase in induction noise.
On going occasional non start.cranks but doesn't fire.crank again and normally starts.
Except over Xmas when it wouldn't start at all one day.Still haven't sussed why it wouldn't go,but replaced cts anyway and its run ok since.
Replaced the rocker cover gaskets to stop oil leak filling up spark plug wells.Genuine parts this time!!
Repaired the exhaust.
Still averages about 35mpg and up to 40 on a steady long run.

Another year gone, upto 113k miles now and still going well.
Only glitch this year was a burst rear brake pipe on the MOT test when they had it on the rollers.Had to drop the tank down to replace it the pipe which was a bit of a faff as I'd only just filled it up the previous day.Replaced the rusty tank strap while I was there.
Bodywork still in pretty good order aside from stone chips, wheels are looking fairly ropey now and could do with a refurb or replacing.Drivers seat back now worn through and alarm randomly goes off.

Well after 3.5 years of ownership its time to say goodbye to the 180.
Thoroughly enjoyed driving it and after a shakey first year sorting it out ,it has run fairly reliably.
A bit of a change, now bought an E46 M3.
