I recently had a new head gasket and many other problems fixed on my 2003 Peugeot 1.4 petrol engine car. The car ran beautifully and I was very pleased with the work that had been done. However, I had been having a problem with the No 1 fuse in the engine compartment blowing and couldn't find out what was causing it until the other day. Just for curiosity, after bringing the car home from the garage, I thought I would check the No 1 fuse again and sure enough it had blown. After researching the various help features online, I discovered that it could be, amongst a few other things, the reverse gear switch situated on top of the gearbox. I replaced the switch with a new one but the fuse still blew. My problem is now that since the fuse blew I lost all the indicator lights, the radio doesn't work, neither does the horn or the windscreen wipers. Funnily enough though, the central locking works fine as does the headlight height adjusting switch, my dash cam. the hazard light switch, the electric windows go up and down, dash lights are all on, but the rear lights only come on when I switch on the ignition key! I have checked all the fuses several times in the engine compartment, and behind the panel on the driver's side and underneath the fuse box in the engine compartment where I found the larger fuses, which all appeared ok. Strangely, No 1 fuse is ok, but I suspect that is because there is no power going to the reverse gear switch. I hope someone can give me some advice as to what could have caused half of the electrics to go awol! Thanks in anticipation of a reply!

Be interesting to see what the issue turns out to be, I'm having similar symptoms after carrying out an engine conversion. Do your headlamps work on dipped beam?

To begin with on mine i thought it was a VAN line issue but have disproved that now, and after spending an hour playing on PP2000 yesterday I've confirmed no fault code in either the BSI or COM2000 (stalk unit). The one anomaly I did find was, even with the key in the ignition the BSI is locked. It is showing as a matched BSI/ECU set and it is recognising the key transponder, engine ECU is unlocked etc yet still the BSI stays locked.

At the moment I'm suspecting a wiring issue between ECU and BSI but not 100% sure. Strange set of symptoms though and as they're so similar I thought I'd post here & maybe be able to share info to get to the bottom of it.

Hi. Thanks for getting in touch and I hope you get your problem sorted out. I went back to the garage and told them everything that was wrong and right with the electrics and I have booked the car in for next Wednesday for them to try and sort it out. I had a 'phone call from one of the mechanics, who is also the grandson of an elderly neighbour of mine, and he told me that his boss seems to think the problem may be with the BSI. Not sure exactly what that is as I'm used to the old cars - Ford Cortinas, Anglias etc! I'll let you know what the problem was if the garage manage to fix it. I just wish I hadn't tried to figure out why the No 1 fuse in the engine compartment kept blowing! Oh well, let's hope my car and yours are back to good health soon.

Well, I'm leaning toward the fella being right since my diagnostics kit showed that the key was recognised and everything was talking, yet the BSI refused to unlock.

For my part, I've got fed up of wire chasing now and seeing as everything was intact I've just got medieval on it, wired in the wipers/washers/horn and high/low beams old-skool & made a switch panel to go in the radio slot. Works fine now hahaha! Not the recommended way mind, just did it as the car's modded anyway and it got things working quicker.

Glad you worked around your problems, and as long as everything works, that's all that matters! I hate the modern cars; too many gadgets, engine managements systems etc, which apart from maybe saving the planet from too much pollution makes it a nightmare for the DIY mechanic. I once built a six cylinder Ford Granada, Ford Cortina 1500cc engine and I've repaired/replaced many parts on the old/easier to work on cars and motorcycles, since I was sixteen. Oh well, they call it progress. They can call it what they like, but don't call it progress! Lol! Recovery vehicle booked for early Wednesday morning so I'm hoping I'll get the car back by the weekend. I've promised myself (and my poor wife!) that I will leave well alone in the future as the stress it not worth it! Thanks for the update.

Yeah I agree, I don't mind the electronics in some respects but when they throw a real wobbler they can be impossible/head-mashing! To be honest that's why I love the old XUD9TE that we've put in our project car, it has a total of 4 sensors (oil pressure/oil temp/coolant temp and rev counter) and can be made to run with one wire (or even no wires if you're desperate!). In fact it's been running without a charging system for a few days and only charged the battery last night to keep the electronics happy! It's still able to be tuned to deliver great power, it'll run on vegetable oil (cheaper, smells nicer and effectively "carbon neutral" and renewable.) and in many ways keeping older cars/engines running is actually better for the environment than buying a newer "greener" car (due to the emissions created & resources used in manufacture of said car.)

Anyhow I'll get off the soapbox now lol best of luck with getting yours sorted & back on the road quickly.

Hi! Success! I found a 20amp fuse that had blown in the fuse box below the steering column. I'm puzzled by this as I'd checked all the fuses there several times and I'm as certain as I can be that they were all ok. The F1 10amp fuse in the fuse box in the engine compartment is now ok, and I put this down to the removal of a blue wire that went to earth from the offside rear light unit. This wire was connected with one of those blue double - wire connectors, but I can't remember why it was there or if I'd connected it. The whole thing is a mystery, but to hear the engine start and all the previously defunct circuits come back into life again was like winning the Lottery. After replacing the 20amp fuse, the engine and everything else worked again, but I still couldn't get the reversing lights to come on. The blue wire, as I mentioned was the culprit, and as soon as I disconnected it, the reversing lights came on! My reversing sensor that I had installed a long time ago also are now working! Well, I sincerely hope you have as much luck solving your problem, so please keep me informed and if I can help in any way I'll do my best! I can feel the stress leaving me as I write! Lol!
