My hunt for a half decent Grand Tourisme is coming to an end. Ive been searching for a while now but cant seem to find one with reasonable miles on thats not been modified.

Im now looking into a standard GTI with SP kit. What are my chances of getting one with under 80k for £1500? Im not that fussed about colour but it must be in pretty good condition (no big scratches or dents). Also it must have the SP kit.

Is it worth avoiding cars with no service history? At what mileage do you usually see head gasket failure? I pressume cambelt changes should be done at 60k?

Any info would be good as im going to look at a few this weekend.

You'll be lucky to get a mint one for that budget.

i just paid 1850 for a black, mint condition 51 plate gti with 60,000 miles, full service history, rare full leather interior, full SP kit, the works. and like £1300 worth of subtle mods (not chavved up) so its fully possible mate

Ok thats good to know you can get one cheaply with all the bits I want. I wouldnt mind mod's like lowering, different stereo etc just wanted to keep the exterior standard. Out of interest where did you find your car advertised? I keep looking on ebay, pistonheads and autotrader but not a lot of new ones appear.

There was a really tidy GT near me up for £1499 a while ago, was trying to get a mate to buy it. Was like 1999 reg with 75k on the clock FSH recent cambelt etc and was imaculate in and out. So I guess it is possible.

Just a matter of time, when you want one there's none about or the ones which are priced higher than expected.

I must admit though, I thought £1499 was really reasonable and was considering buying it myself. It also took ages to sell which I thought was really odd, to me it was a real bargin.

I wouldn't pay a premium for a GT. Stick with the GTi as you'll get more for your money.

Very true... you will more than likely find bumper damage on the GTs.

I wonder why I bother with this place, 4 years and all members do is slag each other off. Even Barry Boys seems a nicer place at times...

Considering their rarity very few GTs seem to have actually been looked after which to me shows there's nothing special about them.

I do like the GT's but ive started looking at GTI's now as I really dont think i'll find a nice one. Ive seen a couple of GTI's locally a bit over my budget but im going to take a look at them this weekend anyway.

Do the GTI's have anything extra over the GT's?

The GT has electric folding mirrors, thats all IIRC.
