hi , i am thinking of starting a project and buying a cat d car , now obviously i no that you have to repair the damage but does anyone know roughly how i would get it back on the road , i herd something like a pat test but not sure
please help

CAT D, doesn't need any test. Just fix it and away you go.
Cat C needs a VIC check from a local DLVA centre.

Cat d doesn't require a test to be put on the road as they aren't dangerous, c and above does I'm not totally sure on how you would go around it but I know a lot on here do.

A cat C is when the car was crashed and it costs more to fix than its worth and cat D is when it costs less to fix than the cars worth only cat C requires check cant remember but cat D will come up if you were to sell it and someone did one of those text check things it would come up dunno if that helps lol

Cat d no vic test cat c only has to have it if you dont want it to say cat c on the v5 or vcar lol you have it done if you want its only about 40 quid anyway

Cat a scrap only cat b parts only cat c vic check if you want cat d minor all will come back on a hpi check

If the cost of repairs (with parts etc being used direct from main dealers with any form of discount) exceeds the value of the car then it is classed as a CAT C.
If the car has been paid out for before the car has been assessed by the insurance company and then once assessed is deemed as being more expensive to repair it's classed as a CAT D.
CAT C require a VIC test just to show it's not been 'rung' i.e. no cars have been duplicated, all vin numbers match and 2 cars haven't been used to make 1. The V5 also shows that the car has been damaged in the past and repaired and deemed safe and legal. You also don't get service history, spare keys etc.
CAT D cars allow you to order your V5 the moment your in possession of the car. It also comes through with nothing in the special note but is still registered as a CAT D with HPi. Very rarely insurance companies class it as a CAT D car but are never registered. It all depends on the insurance company aswell. You tend to get service history, spare keys etc.
CAT C cars are also only worth up to 75% of the original cars value. CAT D cars are worth up to 90% of original cars value.

Uz your a tad out mate, you can get spare keys and service history with Cat C's
I did with my 206 
(Yes it is Cat C, believe it or not)

7 different 206s which I've not repaired (just sold on ebay) and I didn't get a single service history or spare keys.
But it all depends on the insurance company and also the salvage yard.

It's happened with us aswell mate. A 106 Quiksilver I bought was a CAT C at purchase rang up the test centre to check it needed a test and they said no as it's a Cat D. Very lucky if you get that.

I had that with a saxo, my brother was even more lucky with a car he purchased it turned out to be completely un recorded even though it was purchased as a cat C

If you plan to fix up and SELL the cars on then its best to buy unrecorded cars
but yeah, cat D doesn't need any sort of VIC test, just fix the car up, get mot and tax and away you go
