No compression is bent valves. They must have got the timing wrong and started it up.

Hi Steve,

Cheers, It's not sounding hopeful.

Today, apparently is the day I will find out, although I suspect I won't hear anything until I call as per usual.

It went in for clutch (very noisy release baring) it stopped if foot was removed from clutch pedal and the belt and pump was to be changed and I drove it there absolutely fine bar the noise from the clutch.

I was meant to pick it up 4/11 latest. I spoke to Halfords and they said they were having issues with selecting gears as I'd not heard from them around 3/11 (appointment was for 02/11) however they wanted it in a day early 1/11. Anyway this they blamed on the part. (Since sorted apparently).

They then provided me a Fiesta so me and my girlfriend could still go away for the weekend. I thought this was good of them, but did kind of expect it since they were having issues and we had spoken prior to the booking about having it ready before my holiday which they said would be no problem.

I then called them on the Tuesday 9/11 for updates but the manager was in meetings all day apparently. The guy who was manning the phone mentioned the timing issues. First I'd heard of that. I tried to question him as much as possible at the time but he kept back tracking as if the information he was giving me could be wrong.

This made me raise an eyebrow as I was supposed to be collecting the car on the Thursday but couldn't because of the clutch issue. So as far as I was concerned the belts and pump were done. Zero mention when we collected their Fiesta.

The last call made to the manager Wednesday 1/12 I was informed of the no compression problem. I said so you're telling me you've blown the engine up? He replied No, no, no.. not at all sir. I'm just telling you we have no compression and we have a specialist coming Friday.

He reckons they timed it up and were turning it over by hand. At this point I was getting irritated so said I bet you wished you'd never taken on this job. He replied ' er no comment' and we left it as he would give me an update today.

Honestly it's such a mess, much like this post! So apologies for this!

I shouldn't have used them and I never normally would. I was pushed to get the car back on the road for firework night and Peugeot messed me around on my original appointment. It was originally booked in with Pug.

The manager Bob, seems like a nice guy. He got us in to the courtesy car very quickly and we've had it since. He said keep it until the cars done. I'm starting to think he knew sooner and there's probably been a lot of calls & emails going around internally about it.

I wonder how they're going to approach this.

I’m not sure about timing on these engines, but I don’t think it’s straight forward, possibly because of the vvt. Doesn’t sound good though mate, although hopefully they have the wrong diagnoses.

Hi Steve,

I found this thread regarding belt changes in past, sounds like others have had issues with belt changes too.

www.peugeotforums.com/...ge.172090/

I should have taken it back to my friend but I haven't spoken to him in years for no particular reason just life. It was changed between 57-60k without running upstairs to look and ran great, I only asked Halfords to do it at 64k because of the time it had been sitting.

I'm no mechanic that's for sure, but I do know I'd never undertake any work without being 100% certain I knew what I was doing.

Praying that it's wrong diagnoses as you say mate fingers crossed. I do genuinely love that car, It's my second 180 for a reason.

For me, bar the Citroen Saxo Vts this is the car I'd keep as a modern classic just to enjoy while I can before prices start to climb (if at all).

I will update as and when I hear the almost certain bad news!

Hi Jamie,

That really sucks about the issues they are having but you know and I know that this is something that they have caused and they should therefore cough up all the costs for getting it repaired.

Hope you can get it back and back on the road

GTI 180 engine is of the floating crank type.

With the correct locking tools used there is nothing special to timing the GTI 180 engine up - again IF the correct locking tools where used.

If the locking tools where not used then that will explain why its now a non runner.

Unfortunately it's highly likely they didn't lock the crank and smacked the valves.
It's certainly rebuildable, but I wouldnt trust Halfords to do it correctly by any means.

If this was me and its comfirmed low compression, I would be tempted to drop a set of cams in there whilst the head is off and the valves are replaced.

If you need any advice, feel free to drop me a message (or Facebook as I'm not always online here anymore!)
