yeah it is mate, its rare they go but its the shaft / gear which spins when its in neutral.
its always good to be 100% sure about the problem, alot of people just take the garages word for gospel and think they wont get ripped off because it wont happen to them, but there is alot of garages out there who dont quite tell the truth when it comes to problems.
good luck with it shame it become such an expensive problem!

yeh thanks mate, well it HAS to be the layshaft within the gearbox taking into account that I've got a new clutch kit just installed. The car is now at the garage and hoping to get it back either end of 2moro or Saturday. If this money goes to waste I will be furious and will just give up

*** PROBLEM SOLVED ***
Got the car back Friday after the gearbox was installed, and I am pleased to inform you guys on the 206info website that the car is as good as new. I am pleased with myself as I took a gamble by relying on my instinct and other advice from few garages to go ahead with the decision to recondition the gearbox in a job that totalled £350 (STILL CHEAP)... So yehh, delighted!
 :) It's been half a week since had it done but drove it plenty and yeh touch wood no other problems with this French pile of ... beauty haha take care all and thanks for the advice offered anyhow

Out of interest which garage did you use?
Was it the same garage that reconditioned the gearbox?

No the person that reconditioned the gearbox was up in Wolverhampton near the Dunstall Park, and the garage I used just took the gearbox out and in again after the gearbox had been repaired mate.
So; went to ma garage in Coventry to take the gearbox out, took it up to Wolves the next day, then he had completed the job within 40mins - extremely quick I know, then headed back down to drop the gearbox back off to the garage to fit, done all in one day and away I go.
 nice! I'm happy with it!

just reading the convos my car had a clutch replaced a few weeks ago now there a judder when moving off, and its also hard to get in gear 1 and reserves anyone got any idea

Had this probably when i changed the clutch on my carlton back in the early 90's . The clutch kit was one of those cheap and cheerful job's , That as it turned out ,had weak fingers on the pressure plate , when compared to an OEM spec kit .

I have the same problem with the noise when pressing the clutch and am sure its the release baring as i only just had a second hand gearbox in just before xmas. plus the gearbox i had in before was making a louder noise than the noise i have now and the main shaft was knackered.
so now i think its time for a release baring or just a full kit if it still makes the noise then off for a gearbox it is.

Yes mate, just a word of advice; if there is like a whirring sound when clutch up and goes away when you press the clutch = gearbox layshaft bearing,
On the other hand if there is loud sqealing when the clutch is pressed DOWN and goes away when the clutch is up = the clutch release bearing

I have a problem with my clutch/gearbox also. I started getting a strange noise this afternoon on my way home from work. It sounds like when you put those things on your spokes when you were a kid.
Any ideas?
It does it in neutral/coasting and goes when I put the gas down. It also appears to get louder and quicker the faster I go.
Any help appreciated.
