I purchased a 55 plate 206 a couple of weeks ago and everything was fine with the car until last Thursday morning when it would not start. The car was making the usual noise when I turned the key and it was trying to start but wouldn't. Then I noticed the warning message "Engine Immobiliser Fault" I had to go to work so left the car and got a lift. The next morning the car started first time and I drove to and from work with no issues. I did not use the car over the weekend and the problem returned on Monday morning only this time there was barely a sound when I turned the key. My friend came over to give me a lift to work and we thought we would try to jump start it as it had less power than the time before. While the jump leads were connected the noise increased when I turned the key but would not start. I tried the BSI re-boot I found on this site but nothing changed and this morning there is no sound at all when i turn the key and the "Engine Immobiliser Fault" message has also gone. Could it be that I just need a new battery or is it as I think probably a more serious issue? Also whats sort of cost am I looking at to get this sorted? Any help/ideas appreciated!

Try with the spare key first, if the car works, then you have trouble with your key, maybe on a fall or hit the trasponder chip shifted from it´s position on the key (quite hard or difficult but possible) .

Try putting more in, there's been cases where it's come on when it's low.

I'd whip off the battery (after shutting down bsi) and either get it checked or put it on a charge. Strange things can happen with lower voltages.

Thanks for all the advice. I actually changed the battery this morning and it still wouldn't start but was trying to. The "Engine Immobiliser Fault" warning has gone but still wont start. I'll try it one more time when I get back from work and if not I'll just have to get it towed to a garage to have a proper look for me. Thanks

Did you shut down / reboot the car correctly?

If it doesnt start later try rebooting it again.

It might be worth also getting the BSI software updated Wink
