Hi Guys,
I had my rear axle changed about 3 months ago now, it came from a 02 or 04 plate...not too sure. It was in good nick and at 50 quid i thought bargain. Had it fitted as the torsion bar had gone on the original. having a general look around the car yesterday I realised the rear drivers side wheel is touching slight on the inside bottom of the arch...on what seems to look like part of the axle/anti-roll bar maybe? However it noticeably dropped the last time just by looking at it...this time it doesnt seem to be sitting any lower than rest of the car???any body have any ideas what could be wrong??I have 17'' avalani's on it. are there rear bushes on it??

any help would be graefully appreciated guys/gals

are 17's putting extra strain on it???its the same side as what went before.

Has the torsion bar been adjusted to allow for your 17"'s?

If one side has dropped, you could have te original fault again.

check for damage etc and bounce on the corners to settle the suspension and see if it is the same. maybe worth checking the tracking as you can see using 4-wheel alignment how straight and true things are from rear to front, just reverse the gauges and that might help

If it were the bearings you would know about it Smile

If your wheel is rubbing on the inside of your arch (back of alloy side) and leaving a slight mark then it could be the rear axle. Good way to check is to jack the car up at the rear on the side it is rubbing and pull the wheel towards you and away from you. If there is movement in the wheel then it will be the axle.

Also from experience (it may be too early to see yet), but look at the rear of the car so you can see the tyres and the best way I can describe it is see if the top of the wheel is angled in towards the car rather than straight up.
Quick picture of what I mean... / or \ is a tyre:

| | is both back wheels straight up an normal.
/ \ is wheels angled in towards car which means rear axle knackered.

I didnt have the torsion bar adjusted, I have never lowered the car ,nor did the new rear axle come from a lowered car. the rear wheels do look like they are slightly / \ ...I seem to be repairing my pug every other month, was shocks last month, axle before that....getting a bit dishearted now Sad

is there anything that could be wrong thats putting strain on the rear drivers side of the axle....causing it to be the same side that goes??as I dont want to replace the axle again...only to have it go again lol??

Is it one side that has camber or both? And is it making any noise? i.e. knocking?

Just to make sure then, I would jack the rear up and have a pull on the wheels to see if there is movement. You may just have been unlucky with the axle you bought, although for £50 the seller may have known and wanted a quick sale.

I had it on my last 206, it was just repair after repair and was costing me a fortune. Rear axle was the final nail in the coffin so just sold it and got a newer 206 eventually. Sometimes you have to just weigh up the cost of how much yours is costing and if it's worth just buying a newer one.

you read my mind Urban...the axle came off the car when i was there...the car had a blown engine so dont think it had taken a knock. there is a little play in the wheel...think i might have to get rid...only how would i sell as is??dont see the point in repairing to sell it see. major bummer too as tax is up in 4 days and MOT march the 11th....however car has been fixed so much that cant see much needing doing.

These problems have kind of scared me about getting a new 206!!

Tax is no major worry, you can always claim it back for the months you have left. MOT so early means it could be a problem but if it's not too bad on the axle at the moment then it may either be missed or may just go down as an advisory note.

As far as the selling goes...two options really, 1st is to be honest and say rear axle needs work or 2nd option would be to put small spacers on the rear wheels with possibly longer bolts and sell it that way.

Mine got quite bad on the rear and was classed by two garages as 'dangerous to drive'. Soi just put it on eBay as spares/repair and let the bidding take it to the value someone would pay. To be honest though I had over 50 people watching it on eBay within a few hours and offers coming in all over the place! Got just under £500 for mine in the end which I was more than happy with considering the cost of repairing it.

yeah!!well thats what i was thinking....maybe putting some of the standard interior/exterior parts back on and selling the mods separate the...maybe squeeze a little extra cash out.I though about putting spacers on but wheels would coming out of the arches then lol...plus dont want to skank anyone as its not my style lol. As I am broke at the moment...although my dad has offered me his old rover for nothing for now so may take him up on that offer and sell mine anyway I can and sholud have saved some more by then...i love my 206 to bits...its the first car I saved up for myself...but I think now that its costing me more to fix I think our relationship may have come to an end..I guess deep down i jusdt didnt want to believe it was on its way out!!i suppose selling it on ebay for spares and repairs would mean i wouldnt have to mot then...your great help Urban...actually made me look at the positive side of things at the mo......even if I am going to be driving a rover haha

P.S. Before any comments are made about my previous post...I in no way, shape or form, agree with selling a car that has a known fault and not saying anything to the possible buyer. Honesty is always the best policy Cool
