The reason a leaking head gasket can cause the noise is the water level is dropping all the time so when its being pumped around the system its not filling the pipes like a perfectly sound cooling system does.
the other reason for only doin it at certain revs is the water pump is being driven harder by the engine so pumping more water round.
All cars have that problem and if you hear the noise its pretty good sign that your gasket is on its way out and eventually the heater will stop blowing warm air.

Just picked my car up, new head gasket fitted.
I can confirm the noise has gone completely, the mechanic explained pretty much what was said in the last couple of posts.

Mine has started doing this in the last couple of months i just looked at my coolant tank and it was empty too! so looks like a new head gasket is needed soon

Sorry to hear that! Try topping the coolant up as im sure i read low coolant can cause this.
My car literally only had the flowing water sound, the coolant didnt seem to go down quickley. Take it to a garage and get them to use a combustion leak detector as thats what they did on mine and it went brown instantly!!!

Yea thats what i was thinking of getting done just to be 100% its the head gasket! but it dont look good my car has been almost perfect for 3 years and now everythings going wrong at once!!

I was going to flush out and renew the coolant tomorrow but should i do this now? as everyone i spoke to says the head gasket is on its way out so should i get that done and then change it?

Also my cars been down on power lately would like be another symptom of head gasket giving up the ghost?

oh dear more money then do you think its worth getting the coolant changed before the head gasket? im thinking that its pretty pointless but im no mechanic lol

No point changing the coolant before the head gasket because when the head comes off most of the coolant will be lost over the floor due to the radiator hoses and thermostat being disconnected. Also if the head gasket has gone there will be oil in the water, best to get the coolant system flushed out.

if you get the head done, they will flush the coolant and replace it for you after i think.
so yea no point

The same happened to my brothers saxo.
Citroen confirmed a broken heater matrix.
And fair enough, a quick change sorted it.
I personally think its air trapped in the matrix.
A head gasket change would result in a drain and refill (bleed) of the coolant system and would appear to solve this problem.

Well the other day when i went out there (my first post in this thread) the expansion tank was empty and i topped it up and it took 2Ltrs before it was at the right level.
I then started the engine but left the cap off the tank to help it bleed and now there is no running water sound when the cars idleing its gone back to normal but the car still feels sluggish
The water in the expansion tank is a brown colour but it hasnt been changed for 2 years so maybe thats normal?
Im totally confused lol

So I take that the system is now full and bled correctly yeah? The water is brown because its picked up up rust and sludge from around the system. Is there any anti-freeze in the system? How many miles has the car done because form what Ive read on here the head gaskets Peugeot fit in the factory are pretty crap and only last 50-60k miles. It might be an idea to change it anyway and that might sort out the sluggish-ness and water loss. From experience the flowing sound is the lack of water in the heater matrix because its slightly higher than the water in the engine and water flows downhill. Now that the system is full its stopped the noise as you say, but where is the water going to empty the expansion tank???? I changed my head gasket and everything is hunky dory now. Hope this helps
