When I do a full lock either way I hear a funny whirring noise, is this normal? also when I go into any gear above 2nd, there's another whirring noise ( alternator? ) are any of these bad signs ?
threes a charm, my wheel springy things 'clunk' a hell of a lot when I turn, is it renewal time or just worn?
the pug in question is a W-reg 2000, so its had a long life.

Sounds like your power steering pump, mine was doing the same.
I got a new one for £100 and now the whirring is all gone

Check your power steering fluid level and top-up if necessary.
Then see if there's a slight leak anywhere.
Otherwise, what Mrs. Howey said.

noise on full lock is normal, its because when you are holding the wheel at full lock the pump is still operating but cant turn anymore. if you keep it at full lock but stop holding the wheel (i.e. forcing it to full) the pump stops and the noise stops
