ok folks i have an issue with my 2.0 GTI
on start up it takes a few turns longer than id expect to start. (but it always does on 3-5 turns of starter).
Secondly it doesnt idle correctly, hunts.. like up and down marginally with the odd splutter. first thought was ICV however no error light, and the mechanic suggested it was just a dirty throttle body as anything else would show up as an error. The throttle body has been cleaned and there is no change.
So now on to why im considering the CAT, when reving the car parked up the engine sounds fine however when booting it some you can hear it (or the exhaust) sounds rough, like an old blowey engine. especially with passenger window down and along side walls where it echos off. the rougher sound doesnt seem to come from the rear and middle section looks pretty new. so possibly cat failing?
Also though possibly not conected the car is momentarily sluggish on launch, ie thinks of stalling then takes off, all in a millisecond sort of thing.
At 4k plus the car pulls fantastic, infact going up the mountain last week it pulled 115mph easily with more to give. so im pressuming the main sensors are ok???
On a note french cars are new to me and i may just be expecting to much in some cases.

I've heard people clean something called a map or maf sensor, ask your mechanic, sorry I can't be more helpful

yeah worth a go i guess, the maf is the mass air flow sensor, think its in the throttlebody on these is it?
in fact if i unplug it that should steady the revs if faulty maybe?
would love it to be that.

Don't waste your time looking for a MAF sensor...there isn't one.

guess its not that then. have you any other ideas?
do you know if no fault light rules ICV or lambda out?

any body had any issues with vacuum hoses? just occured that this could also cause the irregular idle.
happend to anyone else? and if so which hose was it?

i have this, takes a few turns more than normal, sometimes i have to pump the accelerator to get it going.
idles a bit erratically, sometimes the engine revs sort of pulse up and down.
ive changed:
ICV
Throttle position sensor
MAP sensor
Cleaned and replaced seals on TB
Cleaned all the crap out and replaced seals on my intake manifold
my next step is lambda sensor as CDvRS on this forum had similar symptoms and replacing the front lamda sorted it out, however i cant get mine off 
i brought a code reader as well but mine isnt bringing up any codes, it brought up throttle position sensor but since clearing that it hasnt again.

yeah, that sounds like it. i know the lambda can be capable of it. only difference between our symptoms is that i never need the accelerator to start...... yet lol
