Found this in my online manual.

But my car has the 16-pin OBD connector, shouldn't it be OBD-II compliant?
No, not necessarily. A lot of European and Asian manufacturers equipped their vehicles with D-shaped 16-pin connectors long before they began installing OBD-II systems on those vehicles.

I've sent you full subject by FB mail as it is 5 pages long. Tells you how to identify protocol and identify if you are EOBD compliant.

Any help?

Just found this on another forum

i believe from 96 or 98, all cars are OBDII compliant as a standard...its the protocol to communicate that differs in cars.

Now it's all getting complicated, some say 2001 others 1996. From what I have read elsewhere, the Lexia 3 will do it, but they start at about £100.

Right lets set things straight. OBDII is American same with OBDI. It was a law for American car's from 1996.

EOBD is the European equivalent and it was a law from 2001 for Petrols and 2004 for Diesels.

A lot of manufactures introduced it at a earlier stage than the legal requirement to enable them to mass produce cars.

In general european cars use the ISO and KWP protocol pins 4, 5, 7, 15 and 16.

Scanners that will read ABS and other things are more expensive than the cheap ones that read P-Codes. Depends how much you want to spend, Sealey sell some neat tools

Looks like its either ISO 9141-2 or KWP2000 (ISO 14230) protocol.

Pin 4 = Chassis ground
Pin 5 = Signal ground
Pin 7 = ISO 9141-2 K Line and ISO/DIS 14230-4
Pin 16 = +12 volts

What you gonna use to scan it?

Being a 2003 car technically it might not be compatible with a cheap scanner.

I have read & cleared engine fault codes on a W reg 306 2.0 HDI with my cheap RAC branded scanner.

Know anybody that has a cheap scanner you could try before buying one?

Diesels are a real pain when it comes to diagnostic kits and pre-2004 are a nightmare.

In the end I bought a Sealey VS863 unit which cost me over £200!!! Luckily it works with a lot of other cars so it's going to pay back in time. Our 1.4 HDi is 2002 with the Multiplex electronics and didn't work with anything. Even a local "peugoet/citroen specialist" had problems getting the reasons for an airbag light (and don't even get me started on how much the patr was to fix that!!). This Sealey was sold as compatible .. which it is. Also works with the Renault Clio 1.5dCi and should work with the 2001 206CC 2.0 my daughter has just bought.

When you consider that taking it to a dealer probably costs £80-90 each time for them to give you all sorts of bu11s*** about what's wrong, then that £200 was well spent. Three goes and it's paid for itself .. but it hurt buying it!

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.
