The day started off brilliant with picking up my new centre console which had the vents smoothed over, after being £72 lighter I came home to fit it but on trying to fit the stereo with facia I hit a huge problem, the facia would not fit, not looking into it deeper I proceeded to mask off an area and slowly filed a tiny groove for the facia to sit properly, however when trying again it still wouldn't fit properly and thats when I noticed the stereo housing is a different shape to my original, my original is from a gti, the new console was bought off this site assuming they were all the same, I know this is my own fault for not double checking before buying it but aren't all the centre consoles across the whole model range the same?

new centre console
I know from the pics they may look like the same but on the new console the edges of the stereo surround go in at an angle from the outer edge, where as on my old console this is not present as you'll see from the pic

Isn't this going to be a problem if your heater is turned on full?

Matt the centre console came out of my SW which is a phase 2 which is why the area for the CD player is completely different in shape as they changed the shape of the standard HUs.
Matt the best way to stop the air out of the vents is cut a piece of plastic to the shape of the vents behind the area and then just tigerseal the piece to the vents. The air will then just be sent directly to corner vents.

I'd keep it bud. Especially if you going to get the dials in at a later date.
What were the two grooves you filed..?
EDIT - Sorry now I've realised looking at the pictures again.

On the stereo facia it doesn't have straight edges so filed a tiny groove on the console to allow for this but its the actual shape of the console, not the facia which is stopping it from fitting, when I tried just the stereo, the grooves i've filed are noticeable so will get it sorted at a later date before fitting if I decide to keep it, just looks alot better with the facia fitted
with regards to the vents, I never use the heating except to demist the front windscreen

I like it mate it's a smart idea hope everything works out fine.
Maybe abit of filler will do the trick? Or somthing like a sheet of plastic that you can cut to size and glue in place?

It was Uz that customised it and did an amazing job filling in those vents, I guess I could cut the sides down so I can fit the facia but probably be easier just to fill in the 2 grooves and get the whole thing resprayed again, but that won't be for a while because it's just cost me £72 to get it sprayed
Thanks Dave
