Hey,
I had a bit of a search but i couldn't really find anything so sorry if it's been answered before ( i know how much you guys dislike people who ask obvious searchable questions  )
but anyway, i have a 2005 1.1 sport but i only have 1 key. Is it possible to buy a generic car key without all the circuitry inside it and get it cut at my local diy shop that will open and start the car ? I dont need it to operate the central locking, just open and start the car.

I think you need the stuff inside the key because thats the chip that makes the car realise that the key belongs to it (can't remember the name of the chip now). If you don't have that the car won't start. I got quoted £200ish for mine at Peugeot! More than my car is worth

you'll need a new key with an unused transponder chip inside, which will need programmed to your car to enable you to start the engine.
you can get your new key blade cut by any key cutter.
i suggest you get a key cut ASAP and leave the programming for later if you're skint (i think lee sells blanks, or you get them on ebay cheap too), that way you still have a backup of your keys profile to enable access should you lose/snap your only one.

just had a look online and there's apparently a shop down the street that does car key programming.... will have a look later on
looks like im just gonna have to save up and fork out the cash :L

this is an difficult question,
I work with a fleet of new ford fiesta's and dispite what everyone inc fold has told us, if you get a metal shaft cut the same as the key from a keymakers, it will manually open the drivers door and start the car (by pinching the shaft with a pair of pliers and turning it lol!, without even having a black plastic key part attatched to the metal shaft, no circuitry or anything lol.
works will all of the fiesta's aswell, not just one. im not sure if this is the same as peugeots though

lol ive done that before, but it didnt start the car as there as no transponder chip. you need that little chip to start it
@GregorG yh let us know the price you get, im after the same type of key for mine

Each key has a transponder to speak to the car's immobiliser. Without it you won't be getting anywhere.

i know what your saying and i cant explain it, but ive got a metal 'rod' here cut to a 2010 plate fiesta, i just went out with pliers and the rod, put the rod in the barrel and turned it and the car started and ran for a minute before I switched it off.
very odd
also if you smash a spare key open for a new fiesta its just a rod in black moulded plastic, there's no chip or anything in the spares

I know some of the older Mitsubishi cars you get 5 attempts to start it without the transponder chip, on the 6th attempt it locks out the immobiliser.
Wonder if the Ford system goes along those lines?

Do you happen to be near the car with the main key though? As it might on the off chance be picking it up through that. I find it strange that a '10 reg doesn't have an immobiliser...

its destined to be a rental car, maybe they disable the immobilizer in rentals for some reason, i cant see why? or maybe its so they can get cheap keys?
still doesnt answer the question as to why the proper ford spare key has no chip in it. odd
