My 2.0 HDI is smoking under acceleration, and using quite a bit of oil. Obviously quite keen to sort it out pretty quickly! Some mush has fitted a performance chip on it, would this affect it?
The previous owner diagnosed it as a blocked breather pipe - and pointed out the pipe shown here -
It feels quite stiff, anyone know if this will affect it?
The air filter was full of crud too, i'll clean this out and replace it, i'm just mainly concerned about the oil consumption. I bought 5 litres of oil on the 13th May (Friday 13th, typical), and it's already used 4 litres. It has oozed quite a bit out of what I assume is the rocker gasket, as quite a bit of oil has accumulated in the grooves at the top of the head.

get the pipe off and clean it out and renew the rocker gasket. Then get the car serviced properly and change the filters etc. You say "performance chip" but what kind of one?

if it was me i'd take the rocker cover off and breather pipe off and clean what you can out then drain whats left of the oil and do a 50/50 mix of cheap oil and diesel to flush all the gunk out of all the oil holes with the engine just ticking over for 5 min. (do not rev it as the oil will be too thin for the turbo) after that i would remove the sump and clean the oil pick up in a tub of diesel to make sure the oil is circulateing around the engine.
then give it a full oil and filter service
the oil burning could be down to a stoofed turbo oil seal/bearing.

Lovely stuff, cheers. Think that's a job for my brother, he likes getting his hands dirty.
The performance chip is by Van Aaken - does that mean anything to you? The feul economy is pretty pants, defeats the object of my buying it really!

Ive heard of them yes, it depends on what the chip is really. If its a piggy back chip on the ecu then itll be ok, if its a box then again it depends on what type. If its a digital box thenitll be the better of the two but still a bit crude. If its an analogue one then chuck it in the bin.

it depends on where you drive it as a 2.0 hdi on back streets will drink where as a 2.0 hdi on the motorway will not 
all to do with how often the turbo is kicking in plus how often its serviced

I see. No, actually I don't - that's confused me immensely. It's a seperate box, that's all I can tell you!

I'm doomed then. I try and not rev it too hard around town, but I scrape 36mpg. Aren't I right in saying it can be remapped for economy? I'm not fussed in the slightest about speed, it's a delivery car, i'm used to Fiesta's and 106's!

Ah maybe i'll leave it then. It does shift, just obviously worried about pushing it when i'm guzzling oil!
I presume I can have it remapped for economy and leave the chip in place?

You need to sort out the oil consumption problem, why do I get the feeling this engine has been thrashed to death & its about to give up.

Hmmm i can get about 45-49MPG arround town
That is sometimes pushing it to get away at junctions....

That's what I was hoping for, mid 40's. On my way back from Birmingham I filled up at the services and again when I got home to Hertfordshire and doing 75mph the majority of the way (slowing down only for 50mpg average cameras) and I managed 51mpg.

So what i'm thinking is doing the rocker cover gasket, engine flush, oil & filter change and a recon turbo. Then getting it remapped for economy.
Hope that sorts it.
