I picked up my 2003 206 gti from the dealers last week, it had a bad knocking noise to which i thought was the exhause on the bodywork, i have been to the garage as the dealer agreed to pay any work needed doing.

1st the mechanic said it was middle box sleeve clamp loose, that didnt solve it.

2nd the mechanic said it was the bafflers in the middle section had gone, that was replaced today with new hangers and still that noise is still there.

I had another look and noticed the back box looked a bit low down and looks awfully close to the spare wheel cage.

Has anyone had any similar problems as its already p**sing me off lol

Is the cage easy to take off to test if it is that?

Thanks in advance

Yes the cage can be removed easily, hard to explain this time of night but if you unhook it so it's swinging you can see how it is removed at the hinge, just push each hinge thorough the hole.

I whipped the cage off but didnt solve it, i did see the 2 back box rubber hangers were perished, so the back box is looser than it should and hanging lower, i will get those tomorrow but i cannot see it being that, as when i move it by hand i cant hear it :S :S

This is still making the same noise, i have been back to the garage 3 times now, new centre section, new fitting kits the car has been looked over on the ramp but the only thing i have yet to try is a new back box, it seems a bit rusty and not sure of there is something in there? It passed its emissions test on the MOT so maybe its not :S

Any more suggestions. It is a metallic/tin/ali knocking on metal sound

It was like this when i picked it up from the dealership (independant non puegeot) didnt have it in the test drive so its been a constant problem for 3 weeks, they seem reluctant to spend too much money on it but surely it is not fit for purpose, wish me luck lol

Mine was making a rattling banging sound on idle from the exhaust. It was also blowing.

Got underneath and the backbox was loose from the centre pipe. Took the bracket off, pushed the backbox closer to the centre pipe so they stay touching, cleaned the bracket up and re fitted and it seems much better. Banging and blowing gone.

Might be worth checking that again, mine's a gti as well

Right i think this has finally been solved, ,my mechanic was puzzled by it, but after looking further we found a loose bolt on part of the torsion bar set up (hope i didnt blind you with science on that one :P)

The bolt circled in red was the culprit!

This has stopped the annoying rattle, just thought i would mention it is solved just in case anyone else has the same problem!
