When I'm driving around 5mph and slowing down, I am pushing the gear stick to gear 1 but it won't shift in until I eventually stop or around 1mph? It's annoying that I have to stop to get it in gear.

Is it not to stop you putting it in the wrong gear when moving and throwing a rod?

Its normal, but it is quite annoying in slow traffic when 5-10mph is too slow to stay in second but too fast to get it into first

Try dipping the clutch and revving a bit just before engaging first as first gear is hard to engage unless you're at very low speeds.

Learn to drive CORRECTLY
You shouldnt be trying to select 1st gear while the car is moving, your gonna end up breaking something if you keep trying to force it in to gear.

I have to agree, First gear should only be selected when stopped. 2nd gear should be more than enough to drive off when the car is still moving.

I would never select first while moving and if you are going that slow you can't pull off in Second you may as well stop and select first. If your having problem's pulling off in second gear anything over 3mph I would suggest something is wrong somewhere or something has worn.

Agreed.
But some situations are a pain at least for me on a 1.4i.
