I've been reading about manifold heat wrap and paint to stop heatsoak affecting the rest of the engine bay, keeping everything else cooler
Real world positives? Negatives? Surely it would help fuel economy a little bit??

cool it do very good heat wrap and Techline do very good manifold coating.
if it make engine bay cooler, it will make mpg worse.
the only downside is it will decrease the life of the manifold.

I see, my manifold clanks as it cools down so I wouldn't imagine this would do any favours, I know its normal but I wouldn't want to make it any worse
What about the manifold heatshield, if that was coated would it work to the same effect?

i had may manifold and down pipe heat wrapped on my old car. it was a stainless mani and down pipe but it was good stuff. never noticed a difference in mpg on it . its also better for the engine to take in cold air rather than warm

Mine are only standard so I imagine they wouldn't last as long when heat wrapped?

Not true, it'll overfuel when you start it up, but that's related to engine temperature not ambient temperature.
Cooler engine bay and intake temp will actually increase mpg in theory. In practice it would probably be the same.
However, wrapping exhausts/manifolds is a great idea. It protects other components from heat and degradation and improves flow inside the exhaust.

i have mine wrapped and it dropped engine bay temps noticably, supposed to improve performance but small effect, i wuold recomend it for the sake of a few notes
but on a gti wrap it first and while wrapping soak the heatwrap in water as when it dries it will tighten little tip i got after having mine fitted, also gloves help

weire because i normally see worse mpg in winter than in summer 
so i always asumme cold intake air=worse mpg
