Hi all, I've got my MOT due on the 15th - which happens to be the day I get married (lousy timing). So I was giving my beasty all the due love that she deserves and changing the re-con rack that I fitted 12months ago as it was leaking buckets of oil.
As I was undoing the front subframes front mounts to lower the subframe a touch one of the bolts captive nuts cried no more and sheared off the chassis rail. So to make progress I cut the bolt in half with a hack saw blade.
I've done the job now, and have a second hand non leaky genuine rack in there but I'm left with a little quandry about the subframe mount. The sheared off lump of "nut" and captive plate will not come out of the section of the chassis. So, do I seem weld the subframe to the chassis mount? Do I get my dainghtiest posture with my angle grinder and slice of the side of the chassis mount nearest the wheel and then hope the gubbins make a bid for freedom? Or can anyone suggest a less unpleasant solution?

weld something to the lump of metal? if you can get access that is and have access to the tools

Not sure that welding to the clump of captive nut is going to help me. I guess you are thinking turn the captive nut and remnants of bolt shank into a stud and then re weld the captive nut to the chassis rail? I fear I can't get to it all without dropping the subframe off. Which frankly, the car isn't worth (£300 car).

get a socket, a bit smaller then the diamter of the bolt, hammer it on, weld the socket to the bolt and undo

Sorry guys, seriously sleep deprived now so I'm getting easily befuddled. No offense meant, I'm being a proper wazock after only 3hours sleep

Hammer the socket onto the end of the stud exposed out of chassis? Weld it on then undo? The subframe is in the way, I'd have to remove it to get to the end of the exposed stud. And the nut part is free to spin inside the chassis leg.

With you now. The exposed end of the chassis leg is rather small. I can't get my mig welder in there to get the nut on. Also turning the exposed part of stud (about 1mm) will be dead hard. But I could weld it to the chassis and then re-cut it off after removing the nut. But, my welder is too big :(.

Guys at work have had a look and reckon the best method will be to use a big steel bar and from the front of the car try to beat the remaining captive nut physically back into the chassis until the chassis spilts which should offer me more space to retract it. Me no enjoy this.

Fixed.
To get the captive nut out you need to cut the bolt off as short as possible and as close to the chassis mount with a hack saw. Then from underneath, with a long drift and a big hammer (in a pit or on a ramp) smash the remnants upwards. Eventually the 2mm thick steel plate that locates the captive lug/washer to the chassis mount prises up off the bottom of the chassis mount floor. From the front a screwdriver (not my finiset) can then lever that plate away from the mount enough to get a drift to really hammer it out of shape and up to the top of the mount/bottom of the chassis rail. With thin nose pliers, a lot of cursing, a does of luck the "lump" can be pulled out of the front of the mount through the dirt ingress hole that Peugeot included.
I do recommend people to spray that bolt up through the inspection hole with some protective gloopy stuff.
