Hi all.
I've inherited my missus's 206 as I seem to kill all my own cars (1998, 1.4 8V GLX). Unfortunately I have also inherited some of its faults.
She crashed the car about 7 years ago and the garage that fixed it told her what I believe to be "interesting" truths. All she did was drop of the road into a field a smacked the front bumper.
The garage charged for a new radiator and told her that she could never use the aircon again as it would give her legionnaires.
Well, the rad is bent - so unless they fitted a bent one it was never replaced. I've read through the guide for aircon that is available so I've started with the radaitor fan. I found that both of the relays were dud. Replaced relays, resistor and a couple of the wires. If I disconnect the brown aircon/fan ecu coolant sensor on the stat then the low speed fan comes on for about 4seconds then the high speed comes on. Once the ign is turned off the fan drops to the low speed for about 5seconds then stops. So I think this is correct now?
If I start the car, put the fan to speed 1 (or above) and hit the aircon button the green light comes on on the dashboard. So fuses are ok? The idle does not change, the low speed fan on the rad does not come on and the clutch on the pump does not engage. Is this all normal for a system that has lost all of its pressure?
Assuming that everything above sounds healthy, should I replace the pump and drier as a matter of course and then try to pressure test it/pressurise it? Or is there a chance that the pump is still ok?

All aircon systems are protected by a pressure switch that will not allow the compressor to engage if the system is empty of a134 gas, this is to prevent damage to the compressor that would result if it was run without oil (the oil is included during the process when the aircon is recharged)
The 'legionares' bit should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
Best to get the system recharged and see if it works, in my opinion.

Try kwik fit, as if they cant reduce your cab temp by 10% you get the recharge for free, so wire in a fan heater under the seat

legionares... found in water, lives ideally at around 35 degrees. the temperature of a spa or swimming pool. cholrine is used to kill it and stop it multiplying. i know this as i work in a care home and we had an out break last year and our spa was closed.
never heard of it being in a car tho

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the help. I think I'll get it re-charged and "suck it and see". LOL the kwik fit idea. Excellent idea!!!!!

Just had my air-con recharged the other day - it had never worked since I got the car. Went to a local Air-con specialist and they analysed what was in the system, pressure tested it and after confirming there were no major leaks they vacuum pumped and re-filled with Gas, oil and dye. Working a treat now and great for the few days of summer that showed up recently.
After it was recharged and working, I just bought an air con cleaner aerosol from Euro car parts and followed instructions (basically put it in the passenger footwell with the aircon blasting and then leave for 10 mins). As I have had the car for over a year I know the aircon hasn’t been used for that long. I have been using it a lot the last few days and don’t appear to be dying of any virus. So might be worth a try if your worried about it. You can also get a cleaner aerosol from Halfords but its abit more expensive.
