not really. How would i check it it was fine before the pressure plate went. thanks for the help BTW. I'm reaady to crack up

ya defo in the wrong way around. In saying that, we fired it up after putting the gear box back on but the bottom wasnt sealed properly. was making awful dam noise unitl we tightened up the bottom. i wonder did the release bearing go arseways?

i've noticed now oto the with the clutch cable off, there is play in the clutch arm on the gearbox. Is that normal?

Also, the 'hoop' at the top appears to be bent slightly left. is the hoop normally straight with the arm?

my clutch sometimes makes a clicking sound when pressed... is it a cause of concern?

Update time: I took the clutch cable out of a friends 206 and put it in mine and hey presto, car perfect. I went out today and bought a new cable and the dam clutch pedal is tight as hell.! I just dont understand it. Is there something I need to do when fitting a new cable?

As it all worked fine with your friend's clutch cable then it's obviously trouble with the cable self adjusting mechanism

Which part of it is "tight"
Do you mean there's resistance to the cable action in simply moving the inner cable within the outer cable all on its own or does the cable seem too short when trying to attach to the clutch end lever?

There's various makes of cable too with different types of self adjuster.

Did you have one of these with the not so helpful, easily broken, plastic spring retainer that you have to remove after installing except that it more often breaks off before you can get the cable in?

I had a b***h of trouble with one of the new types of cable recently and it's a design fault. I'm thinking you may be having the same problem. What should have been a 30min job turned into a nightmare

hi,

yes when i've it attached to the pedal and the gearbox, it is makes the pedal very hard in its highest position to such an extent that I can't depress the pedal.

The clutch arm on the gearbox is then also super tight and does not release fully. There should be a bit of play when pulling it towards you.

The cable i have is the same as in the picture, but as you mentioned, i lost that cover before i got the cable installed.

Does the ratchet have to be compressed during fitting? I returned the cable and got another one, same issue Sad

These types of cable are a totally messed up design. They believe you are only going to fit the cable once and would never need to detach it again so unless the spring retainer is on there until the cable is fully attached at both ends then the self adjuster winds up to the highest setting and will not back off. So unless you find a way of holding back the spring tension of the spring inside the self adjusting mechanism then that's it for life- a one time fit part

Like you, I had enough time wasted and simply bought yet another new cable but had to take so much care not to break the spring retainer which is under severe stress as the cable has to go 90 degrees immediately after the self adjusting mechanism and as the spring retainer is made out of broken biscuits it doesn't take much strain Very Happy

I mean, look at it! Is it any wonder it breaks at that angle. No problem if you have a car where the cable goes straight out from the bulkhead but on a 206 it needs an immediate bend so it's goodbye to the plastic spring retainer. Even with the utmost care you can't stop the sideways strain on it

Although I've fitted a new cable now and the car drives fine, the bite is high and i can hear the clutch release bearing whistling like a kettle with the clutch pedal fully released when the engine is cold. Still not happy with it, there's not enough slack being allowed in the cable at rest, it's still under slight tension

Apart from fitting an older style clutch cable which will fit, like it should, in minutes as you've found already, and have some free movement slack at rest then these newer cables are simply a rubbish design

I've been doing some investigations on the first new cable I fitted to see what on earth the self adjusting design inside is and I'm not impressed at all so far

I can't promise this will work for you as I've only been investigating the mechanism this morning out of morbid curiosity but you can pull back the waterproof cover to gain access to the spring.

Old cable above, newer cable below with waterproof cover pulled down
With a strong hand and couple of tie wraps you can compress and hold up the spring, I put two on here, doing it in stages. This is doing the same job as the absolutely super plastic spring retainer of course Very Happy

This will take the tension off the vice like crab pincer which actually grips the inner cable. See the black kind of one way lock that grips onto the cable? What a crack pot design, you want a free running cable so let's clamp a vice onto the inner cable!

Now you may be able to pull the inner cable at the clutch end which will slide the vice up the cable to get the free play you need. Don't go taking it all apart like I did just to see what's in there

Of course, once it's all fitted then cutting off the tie wraps would be the same as breaking off the high quality, super designed retainer

Like I said though, it's all theory and I can't promise for how that will work in practise. It's easier with the cable off the car but trying to do that in situ would be a nightmare

Deckchair5, my ever lasting thanks! I refitted the little white cover, and refitted cable to car it it is now working!

I'd buy you a pint but we're in diff countries! Smile

THe first cable i got didn't have the little white cover for the adjuster so it just kept extending out to the max. Don't know why it didnt come with one TBH.

The second cable i bought had the cover but I must have removed it before I had both ends connected last time.
