Ahhhh the old VTR inlet swap, one little hick up though

You cant buy the older version as the port allignment is different

You need an inlet manifold off a saxo past 2000

Hmm well i seem to have screwed up refurbing the glass of my headlights i have in fact made them more clouded rather than less, there not completely screwed as when wet or have glass cleaner there crystal clear but then it dries and they look terrible Sad Looks like i need a couple of higher grades of sand paper. I'll get some pics up in tomorrow or in a few days and see what you guys think i need to do to save them (i've lost my phone charger meaning i can't take photos since my supposed super high tech phone can't hold enough power to last more than 2 days...curse me for leaving the wifi on constantly Confused ).

Ah right thats good to know, i was only asking because of past history with the 106's needing the side skirts and archs so the bumpers didn't look out of places (bit sticking out where the arch lines up with it). I might get the wings if i find bumpers off a car being broken though. I was thinking of GT repping it anyway, either way i need bumpers for the fogs, country roads aren't going to be nice in the mornings this winter, and if last year was anything to go off i couldn't see more than 10-20 metres in front in the clio with the fogs on so i will probably need them on this too.

Yeh i know, if i had the old alignment i'd be getting the S1 rallye inlet instead since this is supposed to be the best in terms of airflow (and looks the best if i do say so myself), besides there's plenty of written off saxo's and 106 usually down the scrapyard which became a montly visit with the old 106 (like hell am i going to pay £300+ for a new throttlebody not including sensors, £60 used including all as good as new sensors and jobs a gooden :P, so i would expect a VTR one will be similarly priced there pretty fair down there), pretty sure i remember seeing some 206's too Rolling Eyes i may have to bully my dad in to taking me down there to see what got any going.

Looking good so far although I can't make my mind up with your CC'd interior bits. I'm planning to do mine but am thinking more along the lines of gloss black, I think the blue is just a little too bright.

The dials are the best colour brightness to go off, the rest are abit messed up since my dash sits in sunlight so it throws the colours off on my phones camera, . If you do go down the colour code route though i highly recommend paints4u (google) they do a very good match, and the fact it was the only place i could get the paint (other than peugeot themselves), considering you see alot of this colour on the road no where such as halfords do the paint. There cans are also very good i didn't even get through 1 can, i ordered 2 considering it took 2 cans of primer to do it all.

Well not much has happened mod wise but i have come across a problem, so anyway yesterday after posting a letter i came home and decided to run the engine since it's been about a month, and it's going on the road in the next few week.

First Problem!: Battery completely dead, now i was expecting it to be somewhat flat but it was completely dead, no headlight, no lights when turning ignition, central locking dead, thankfully after charging the probs solved so no harm there.

Second Problem!: My car seems to have developed an exhaust leak, so after starting it up, everything was fine (still very very quiet, i was expecting it to run a little rough for the first minute or so, so this was a nice surprise) until the engine came up to operating tempreture i noticed white smoke coming from the engine, at first i thought it might be water but i gave it a sniff and it smells oddly like exhaust. DOH!!! Now i'm having some issues locating the leak, it seemed to be coming from the 1st lambda (blow the smoke away it appears first there, and at the back where it bolts to the engine), since smokes hard to find there's a few pics below of the same thing to point out where its coming from on the engine side;

 

 

 

 


So anyway i went to tighten the lambda only to find it was already tight (got my dad to try too and he found it tight), so i went about looking for another leak, now this is where you guys come in does anything look out of place in this pic below?

 


Now a few notes on this issue, the heat coming off the exhaust is different in different places, on the lefthand side the heat coming off is hotter than the right (now i'm thinking this maybe because of the dipstick), also i thought it might have been the oil from the old leak which i fixed but also when i think about it, it wasn't doing this last time i started it so i don't think it is the old oil. Oh and you can't see the smoke very well once the heat guard is off by eye so the phone was definatly not going to pick it up (i'm guessing the heat guard was acting as a dam, building it up until it escaped out the sides.

some better news though, i finally figured out what was wrong with my rear washer, after getting the third brake light off with a bit of brute force Wall Bang i found there was a kink in the tailgate (why do french cars play up in areas you can't physically reach?), it's now working well and it's one more thing ticked off my to do list.

Also while checking the pump i found i have new brake pads on the car (shame the standard brakes fitted to this are pants, maybe they need bleeding, but they didn't really feel spongy or anything).

Next thing to do on my list is sometime in the next week the throttle body and induction pipes are coming off, the throttlebody is covered in oil from the breather pipe (along with abit of the induction pipe it's connected to, i think i need an oil catch tank it was pretty filthy), so this will be cleaned, along with cleaning out all the induction piping along with checking for any possible blockage.

Just one last question would alot of oil covering the throttle flap (the bit which controls how much air comes through, not sure on it's proper name) cause the engine to seem abit like it's hanging back? I know these engines start idling badly when they get too dirty anyway. (although my idles spot on so i'm not too worried)

Bit of an update:

So on fridays post i mentioned the throttlebody being caked in oil, see below;

 


So anyway i decided to go about cleaning it, after about an hours worth of undoing, tugging, finding something else connected at the last minute i finally got the inlet off to find behind it 10 years of grime... I guess i should clean this up before i put the mani back on..
 


And heres the filthy thing Thumb Down :

 


Now it doesn't look that bad on the outside, apart from the oil around the rubber gaskets but when you take a look on the inside it's caked in oil and general dust which the filter didn't stop (sorry it's hard to get a decent pic with something like this);

 


So on with the cleaning, the tools of choice? a hose pipe, engine degreaser (spray can style) and wd40, 10 mins later and look at the water Confused ;
 


Now i was abit stuck on how to get it dry, i was already planning on just leaving it a day but i decided to give it a helping hand by using my paint equipment..
 


Final Fase of operation inlet clean, all the sensors and throttlebody was cleaned (along with the coilpack since it had to come out to get the manifold off;

 


Now some bad news, i'm praying this isn't what i think it is but look whats in my coolant reservoir.. Evil or Very Mad

 


It's a really dark and murky, but it doesn't exactly look like oil either, are there any other things this could be other than the headgasket? The only other thing i've heard is when 2 different types of coolant get mixed together, dunno how true that is though.

Oh and one last thing, how do you remove this part of the induction piping?

Is it the box you are trying to remove? Look to the right and it will be secured onto a bracket which the box clips onto at the top. I don't have this air box system but that is how mine is, you just push the clip and pull upwards.

If not, you may want to get the passenger arch liner off and try from there, as with this box setup they have an air feed duct going to the arch liner

So a little update really about whats been going on the past week...

First off the cars done it's first 320 miles and didn't really miss a beat, i figured out that from a full tank down to a quarter remaining it's averaged about 39-40MPG which isn't bad considering i did nothing but stop start, getting to 60 and hitting another roundabout straight after for 60-80 miles.

So anyway i've discovered a few issues on my journeys, only 1 thing maybe 2 could be considered majorly wrong, so the wonderful list of where my moneys going to be going begins Rolling Eyes

Minor Issues

- The power steering makes weird rubbing noises upon start up, once the engine warms up abit the noise goes away (this could possibly be the alternator, aircon, or anything else in that region on the aux belt, probably a bearing on one of them)
- One of the rear number plate lights is broke, the glass is missing and the bulb doesn't make a proper connection
- I need new license plates, the A on my front one is coming off, meaning it will soon be illegal (you can stick it back on for the time being)
- Current headunit won't turn on the subwoofer (connect the remote cable to the ignition wire on the radio and it does come on but the radio refuses to notice it
- Wipers Smeer all over the place
- Lots of play in the gear stick when in gear (can move the stick left to right about half an inch), also it vibrates and moves when accelerating (so by the sounds of it i need new linkages and an engine or gearbox mount)

More Serious Issues

- After visiting a friend (car just hit 220miles in the 320), i checked the coolant again and there was a bit of oil floating on top
- The clutch is on the way out, push the clutch in and you hear a loud whirring noise (my dad thinks it's the thrust bearing), but once it's heated up again the issue goes away, but i believe it may be slipping slightly also.

Oh and one last thing cleaning the inlet improved my cars throttle response and it pulls alot better now.

Monday

So after discovering the oil in my already sludgey coolant, i decided to be proactive and try some of the wonderful Holts Radweld;

 


Now this stuff worked miracles on the Clio Sporting, when that was drinking a litre of water a day i decided to give this a try and it stopped the leak completely, and this was after we took it to a garage who couldn't find a leak even with there ramps leaving it running, the headgasket was checked and that came back fine so that was a total mystery (although my dads new renault is doing it too, so i dumped some in that too).

Unfortunatly it's too early to tell if it's stopped the leak as my coolant system needs some serious cleaning (more on that later).

Wednesday & Friday, The Clio Strikes Back!

So while not relevant to this project, it is my old car and my housemates (well ex housemates) car it does bring back some fond memories. So after being dragged out to my housemates work (she does alot of driving for her nursing job), i had a very unnerving night lets just say that, loud noises like the engines about to explode while driving can make you a little nervous is all i have to say, the worst part? she's been driving it for months like that aparently.... That car never got abused when i was driving it...well except for when i gave it a thrashing.

So after driving around for a while i determined that the problem was either the driveshaft, cv boot or the wheel bearing, it was making different noises depending on which way the wheel was turned and also when you got over 40mph it sounded like the engine was over revving but drop the clutch, rev the engine and it isn't the engine as the noise is still there.

Come friday the car was jacked up on my drive, confirming my suspicion of a bad wheel bearing (turn the wheel and hold the spring you can feel it grinding on the passenger front, also the wheel wobbles even though i had to call in my dad as reinforcments to get the wheel off the bolts were on that tight (sue me i have freshers flu! i shouldn't be doing this s**t when i'm ill, but hey i never could say no to her lol)).

Today

Good old student finance came in today Cool

So i decided to get my servicing gear and service the little pug, today is a good day to be fair student finance comes in and eurocarparts have 25% off at the moment (code crazy25 i think, click engine parts and the banner tells you), i decided to pick up the stuff and my god tamworth customer service is slooooooow, they only had 1 person on the desk and when it was my turn they didn't have the parts ready for me like they said they did, but hey ho i only paid £99 for something that should have cost me around £120-130;

 


So what do we have here?

- Guttmann Oil and Air Filter
- Bosch Super 4 Spark plugs
- Denso Pollen Filter
- Carlube Triple R 5w40 Fully Synth 5L
- Triple QX Red Antifreeze and coolant 5L & 2* 1L (turns out it's not premixed though so i have enough to do 2 changes, perfect! explained later)
- Carlube Gearbox Oil 2L
- Holts Speedflush
- Top Tech 12v Digital tyre pump/light

So nothing really much to say about the majority of things, the pollen filter was pitch black on one side (guessing it never got changed, but the burning smells gone now), the oil filter was left unchanged (couldn't get the plastic black housing off without breaking it, need a bigger socket to fit over the top, it's too tight to undo by hand), thats about it in terms of regular stuff.

Now when it came to changing the coolant, my god er you should just see the pic instead and no that isn't dirt in the pool of water/coolant...

 


Lots and lots of brown sludge, now i must not have done this properly, i heated the engine up to operating temp, heater on hot, fans on, took the bottom rad hose off and then push clean water through the reservoir. Refilled the system (weirdly it only took 1.5 litres of water and about 2 litres of coolant so i cant have got it all out), bled the system on the 2 points i could see, took it for a drive and there is more brown sludge but i plan to dump the speedflush in on thursday, go to uni come back and redo the coolant.

I do have to say though that even with the coolant still iffy, now that my car is fully serviced it pulls even better and i thought it pulled well before, damn Kwik Fit overfilling the oil.

So after the servicing i hit halfords and ebay websites and bought a few goodies, so what did i buy?

- A new headunit, hopefully this will make my sub work
- Bosch Aero Wiper Blades
- Drivers Suspension Strut Cover (to stop water build up on the strut on the 206's flawed design!)
- new number plate light, along with a couple of LED bulbs for them


Just need to find the other bleed points (if there are any others) on the coolant system to do the coolant correctly. Can anyone tell me if there are anymore bleed points except the one on the top hose which goes into the cabin (into the heater matrix i assume?), and then the big allen key head one on the radiator. And also was my technique right for flushing? Next time i may refill with just water till it becomes completely clear, probably should have done it this time.

Thats it for now though, back to ebay to see if there's any other good deals going.

So heres a small update, for the bargain price of £72 i have won myself some Leather/suede seats from a Gran Turisme thats been broken not a GTi so thats a nice surprise considering i already got calipers off a GT. So here they are:

 

 

 


There pretty much perfect except for the cracking in the leather as seen below (on both front seats):

 


Now i did win the door cards, and glovebox to match the seats but i decided against it since the blue ones match the actual car rather than the grey ones (they'll be up for sale on ebay soon along with the old seats if anyones interested in them, there pretty much perfect, only need a clean. And the old seats the drivers one has a slight tear, i can email pics to anyone interested).

A few side notes the drivers strut cover, license plates, headunit have arrived and been fitted, along with the coolant being reflushed and the puddle of coolant looks much more healthier (although it seems to have turned my new coolant somewhat brown but the oil is fine i checked so god knows), pics below:

 


 


And the final note i won a GTi handbrake, along with phase 2 rear lights and am currently bidding on a leather speedo surround.

Hey guys this is a 2 part update (1 old i forgot about, and todays)

Old

My new rear lights arrived which i won on ebay to replace the older style rear lights (or what i like to call, 106 lights made to fit the 206, same horrible style).

Only problem with them is i lost the plastic screw which holds one of them on down the hole below it...

Well with plenty of things keeping me busy this month i haven't had much chance to update (uni assignments, modding friends pc case, death, etc.) , not much has happened but a couple of things have happened 2 little, 1 expensive .

First off my rear lights have developed a problem well one of them, condensation won't stop building up, see below; Confused

 

 


It's taken a good 4 hours with a hair drier blowing air into it to dry it out, once it was dry i got abit drastic with electrical tape

 

 


Yeh that should stop the condensation right? Laughing

Next up i can say i got my first speeding ticket the other week, stupid mobile van was sitting on a hill right where it changes to 40 (or to 30 depending which way your going), now i go this way every weekday to uni so here i am climbing the hill in the 30 start accelerating since i know exactly where the speed change is, get on the top of the hill only to see the damn van, caught me doing 40 in a 30. i suppose it was going to happen sooner or later, lasted longer than most of my friends. anyways...

 


So why am i showing you my (filthy) car in an unfamiliar place? Well on tuesday my cars clutch was back making the constant ticking noise when the clutch was disengaged (even after 30 miles, normally it stops when it's warm when it happens), went to bed, got up started off to uni, got halfway and the clutch went hard and the ticking noise could be heard when driving, so i turned round. Managed to get it home which was abit of a nightmare when to get it into gear without it grinding my toes had to be jammed right against the steering column.

And the noise? Disengage the clutch and this time it was "tick tick tick, grind/tick, grind/tick" and repeat with the ocasional THUD. Took it to the garage to have a new clutch, picked it up thursday asked the guy about the clutch and a few things came up.

- This is the 2nd clutch it's had replaced, and the one they took out was a valeo one so it was abit weird it's had two clutchs before this one (bear in mind it's only done 106k).

- My gearbox was being a right b*****d to them, it refused to take the driveshafts back in but they couldn't see anything wrong with the gearbox itself, after abit of messing they finally went in.

- The old clutch had chunks missing off both the cover (the bit which grabs onto the arm? someones been riding the clutch alot anyway) and the clutch plate itself had chunks missing from it (i assume thats what the THUDS were on the way to the garage.

- And some actual GOOD news has come out of this job, front end wise it's all MOT worthy according to the guy (he does the MOT's at his garage), the only thing he sees that will need replacing for the MOT is the cat as it's developing a hole.

If anyone wants a cheap DECENT garage with great staff in the tamworth area go to Coton Van & Truck Hire (01827 57171, www.cotonvanandtruckhire.co.uk) they charged me a grand total of £252.07 for everything (thats £62.06 for a Valeo clutch, £5 Gear oil, £140 for 4 hours labour) the rest is VAT and £3 for some engine oil which i needed.

One final thing, my new clutch? I HATE IT! it's too light and i'm not used to it, it's horrible but in a good way (i'm just not used to it, i like a heavyish clutch).

Well guys i'm afraid to say that this may be the final update for this car, it's in need of another big bill repair Crying or Very sad

I've been helping my friend move to her new house, several small journeys all week long (along with one to birmingham), and it appears that the unusual amount of small journeys have finally killed my engine, on the weekend was the full on moving everything, i must have done 60 odd miles which usually is less than a quarter of a tank, noticed my tank was down to half, thought it normal since id already been to birmingham since filling up, today though after filling up yesterday must have done 30 mile and its already down to 3 quarters.

Went to check my oil while i was waiting for my friend to get here and unlock the door to her new house and look what i find (it wasn't quite this bad when i opened the bonnet, this was after i opened it slightly only to find it starting to overflow, never done that before even when the engine was hot)...

 


Thought great do i have enough oil to get home since this is clearly my headgasket gone? Pulled it out fine, wipe, go to push it back in only to find it wont go back in (granted its abit of a pain with the way it is anyway but it always went in fine before), eventually with a bit of wiggling it went in, pull out to check and look... Evil or Very Mad

 


It's snapped clean.

So now i'm left with a choice since the cars now officially off the road till january, i can either have the head gasket done, swap my engine out for a newer 1.4 with less mileage (i'm assuming multi-plex engines are the same except the wiring?) or since my friend is getting some money soon and buying a new car i can always buy the clio sporting off her since she's only going to part-ex it anyway.

Hmm now the pro's and con's of either cars;

clio pro's
- I know all the work it's had done to it since my housemate bought it.
- I have serviced it twice in the 2 years since she's had it.
- It's got a complete new exhaust system minus the manifold
- Never had any engine of gearbox issues other than an engine mount failure
- It has alloys
- Bucket seat style standard seats
- Great Brakes (even with the rear drums leaking fluid, they still manage to hurt your neck when slamming them on)

clio con's
- Bodywork is in need of some attention (mainly the front bumper)
- No aircon
- Central locking is semi broke
- The clutch is heavier than my 106's were, i mean like moving a really heavy rock with your foot (not quite sure whats going on but i'm guessing it needs some attention)
- The gas pedal seems lower than the brake pedal (again may need some attention as this wasn't like this when we car shared)
- Driving Postion is abit cramped

206 pro's
- New Clutch
- Good bodywork
- Good economy (up untill now)
- Aircon
- Lower milage than the clio
- Guy who did my clutch says front end wise it will pass MOT
- New exhaust apart from CAT/Manifold

206 con's
- Can't get the driving position right
- Headgasket gone
- Don't like how the clutch feels now (yeh yeh thats just me but im the one who has to live with it)

I guess the 206 wins, i don't think i could go back to the clio if i'm honest it's quite cramped (even the 106 had more space inside) and even though it's a "Sporting" my 206 even with the headgasket gone pulls better than that.

I might have a look into getting a newer 1.4 8v, but at the same time i see no point other than lower miles since even with the headgasket gone it pulls very well (in fact if it weren't for my fuel consumption dropping through the floor i wouldn't have known).

Thats it for now, any opinions on which of the 3 i should choose are welcome so long as it isn't something along the lines of "clios are s**t!"

Hey guys,

So it's been a while since i updated the old blog (i got lazy and stressed, i'm sorry ), anyway quite a few things have happened and after re-reading through this i notice i left on quite a cliff hanger, anyway i kept the car but it put up a fight wanting to be free but i'll explain in a moment.

Anyway so i left it with the head gasket blown, well i had that fixed back in December for £425 and thats for everything labour, new gaskets, new cambelt, oil, coolant new dipstick and a 500 mile checkup which it passed with flying colours. but during the 500miles to the check i broke down 1..2..3..4, yes 4 times in the space of a week, twice the RAC had to be called out, so the list of problems that happened are below.

- Got the car back on a friday
- Got halfway to uni on monday and the EML started flashing and running like a dog (engine shaking crazily like an engine mount failure), fault codes read and it came up with an intake temp sensor failure and a suspicious single/multiple misfire. Turned out to be the coilpack.
- Tuesday...halfway to uni and the STOP light started flashing, looked at the temp gauge and it was showing 120c, got out felt a pipe and it was cold, turned engine back on to find it sitting at 60c (bear in mind this was only 2-3mins after the warning light)
- Wednesday...driving around i notice my car was sitting constantly at 60c, taking 20-30mins from 60c to get up to 80c only to have it drop straight away as soon as moving, thought my thermostat was stuck, go to fit a new one and whats this? THERE IS NO THERMOSTAT, I'VE BEEN CONNED!
- Thursday... driving home from uni and i lose all power, open the bonnet and what oh what could it be boys and girls? Petrol sprayed all over my wonderfully clean engine, the fuel line that connects to the rail had popped off, pop it back on, try and wash off as much petrol as i can with the little water i had in the car and set off again, lose all power again, check engine to find its popped off again resulting in another call to the RAC, after about 30mins of him trying he eventually got it to stick on properly (aparently it's a 2 click system, 1 seal, 2 lock, i only did 1 click).

Yer 2011 has been a bad year for me...

Anyway roll on 2012 and it's that time of year, time for the dreaded MOT but surprisingly it looks like times are looking up dropped it off, came to check up on how it went and it passed with only 2 advisories and there really petty considering this time last year my 106 failed with over 10 advisories. The 2 advisories were Rear wiper blade split (FIXED), and rust on drivers front suspension (surface rust, nothing bad). OH and the the new mot certificate is cheap and tacky, i could remake it in word and it would look legit on a piece of cheap asda a4 paper.

Anyway with only 1 advisory left to fix i figured that now would be a great excuse to get some goodies, so i managed to pick up some Apex 35mm lowering springs with shock absorbers from an 03 206 for £30 (springs have only done 2k, and the shocks are in good condition so chances are there going on the car and the old ones are being sold).
 


Now i know what your thinking, whats the point in lowering when you have those aweful tacky trims, well i treated the car to new shoes too, welcome some 205 Speedline SL201 also known as pepperpots, got them for £50 with 4 good tyres (2 new);
 


The paints flaking off them but structurally there is nothing wrong with them, not even curbing, the next few pics are of the refurb stage (only done 2 of them at the min and i may respray, i'm unsure at the min i'll explain later), so pic number 1 is 20 mins after jet washing i didn't think it would work but it worked surprisingly well;
 


The rest of the paint refused to come off with hand sanding using 400grit paper so i resorted to my new toy a Dremel 4000, now i bought this for modifying my new computer case ready for the new computer i'm building but i have found many other uses for it, the only problem with using this it seem that the alloys arent hard enough to cope with 35,000 rpm, and started leaving marks on the center so i decided it was good enough but it was too late the alloys put up a fight and melted my extension cable
 


Anyway next up was the priming stage, one of the wheels i've done had a chemical reaction on the rim and no mater how much resanding, it kept coming back (looked like it was cracked), in the end i cheated with filler...
 


After saiding that down and reprimering the rim, i finally moved onto the paint stage, but what colour? Ford Graphite Grey with a hint of Bleu Tivoli (aka colour coded paint), now the pictures below don't really do the colour justice i think it's the lighting that throws it off as they look greenish in the images for some reason, but there more blue, i'm unsure anyway i'm thinking of going over it with grey to return it to Graphite Grey (when i can be bothered to do the other wheels i'll do a side by side comparison.

As i say i'm unsure on the colour, at times i like it and at times i'm unsure. Oh and one other thing i don't suppose you guys know what bolts these take? Everywhere i've looked/asked people have said flat seated bolts (same as the 205 1.9 speedlines) but the holes on the inside are flat but in the center where the hole for the bolt itself is it seems they require a taper so i'm unsure and i sure ain't buying 2 sets of bolts considering there £30-40 for a set.

Think thats about it, all that i can think of anyway, cya.

well done with the progress but i think the lights would of looked better colour coded
