Hi all, new to the forum and have a problem with fuel economy. I bought the car last week, it is a 2003 1.1. I use the car on 13 mile trips to work, half dual carriageway and half normal roads. Putting a tenner in I'm getting approx 30 to the gallon. Air filter was dirty so changed it, any ideas,

Just try giving it a full service and running it on high octane premium fuel for a month and see if it improves

I got about 30mpg in my first 1.1 i had. I red lined every single road though... warm or cold  not 1 engine problem to be had in over 70k either, solid we guy so he was

My mrs only gets that and she has a very well maintained car. Shes not a mad driver either. Its mostly town driving.
So I would say thats about right really.
Just get a bigger engine  My 1.6 can do 520 miles on a tank, pure motorway driving

there's nothing wrong with it, 1.1 is gutless & its trying to lug nearly a ton of 206 along.

With a 1.1 engine it should be easy to obtain 40mpg average and 50mpg or more on a long run

Once you have checked the normal service items, (especially now you cleaned the air filter) then it's best to reset the ECU so it relearns quicker the best set up for the current state. It'll get there in the end but it's a good idea to tell it to "take a fresh look" whenever you change any major engine part that affects economy. That will reset your LTFT (long term fuel trim) and it will find the new best settings
LAMBDA
After that, the most significant effects on fuel economy (besides your right foot) are the lambda sensor - which will fine tune back the fuel used when at steady rpm -so that has a huge effect on economy
MAP
and your MAP sensor which tells the ECU how much air is going in so it adjusts fuel accordingly.
Either one of those giving misinformation and the mpg plummets

Thanks for the replies, after looking at the mpg figures, mine seems quite low, how do I reset the ecu? Is it just a matter of disconnecting the battery?

I would say your getting about the right sort of MPG with the driving your doing to be honest. Your only doing short journeys so the engine will only just be getting up to temp when you come to your work place and the same on the way home.
The MPG figure shown are done under lab conditions and dont really reflect on the true world.
When was the last time you gave it a good service? Give it a good service and see if that improves things.

No, those are real owners figures and it's an average consumption ie for varied driving conditions. The manufacturer's figures seem to be done downhill with a wind behind you

Yes that'll do it if you disconnect for an hour or so

TU1 lump pulling nearly a ton of weight along, you aint gonna get good mpg figures from it unless driven like a eco hippy
