when i put my full beam on my main beams go out. just wondering if that was normal.

No thats not normal, sounds like it could be the relay or you may need a new comms unit.

Sounds like you are non-plexed and have the wrong stalk fitted to your car.

Needs modifying or fit a relay

oh right well its happened ever since i changed the indicator stalk as the indicator would stay on. what relay is it?

The GTi had crystals as standanrd thus having the right stalk. It wasnt mentioned until leter in the post that OP had replaced the stalk.
