I have a 2000 W reg 1.4lx 206. In the last few weeks I have noticed it making a squealing noise when coasting along at low speed (10-20mph). Obviously at that speed it is only noticeable when I am in fairly slow/heavy traffic. It does seem quite loud though. It sounds more like a rotary noise as opposed to a rubbing noise but this is just my guess on it.

Can anyone give me any (sensible) pointers on what it might be and if they think it would be expensive to fix? Could a reasonably competent person fix it at home with basic motoring tools?

I would be really grateful for any advice before going to a garage Very Happy

Could be the drive belt tensioner bearing or just the drive belt. Is this only happened when the engine is still warm? any improvement after the engine properly warm up? When was the last time u change your drive belt?

If just the belt need changing then just a maximum 15 minutes (2 spanner rating) job and will be under a tenner for the belt. If the bearing need changing it can cost u from 40 maybe up to 90 pounds if the tensioner bearing is self adjusted (u can see spring like attactment near the bearing).

If the noise is not too much, just turn on your music and ignore it! Smile

Not for the bearing. Mine use to squeak and it wasn't that much to change.

Does the sound change with Engine Revs or Speed? If its Engine Revs, its probably timing belt or more likely, the aux belt (and the relevant surrounding parts)..

With speed, suspension, wheel hub, bearing, so on..
