My Headgasket is leaking oil from one of the sides (I think nearest the alternator). I have been quoted £500 to fix the problem.
Just wondering from the experts if this is a good deal? Also am I right in understanding that it does not need skimming if it is just leaking from the side?
No evidence of murky coolant or mayo in the oil cap.
Thanks for any tips

If it does need a new head gasket, then not skimming the head while its off is false economy, but if you're desparate to save money its possible to skip this.

Either get the head skimmed OR look forward to changing the head gasket again very soon.
Choice is yours.
£500 for a TU head gasket replacement is that a Peugeot main dealer quoting on the price?

Yeah its a main dealer. I always thought from reading these forums from time to time that a head gasket skim is only needed if the engine warps? Is this not the case?
The current leak does not result in oil mixing with coolant etc - does it still need skimming?

The way to tell if it needs skimming or not, is to measure it for flatness. Just becuase symptoms do not reveal themselves now, doesn't assure the longevity of it. If you get a new head gasket, and head skimmed, and head rebuilt, there's no reason it won't last a long time (8-10 years+). Effectively, its a top end engine rebuild.

Thanks for that paul_c that helps clear it up :). I'll speak to the garage about your comments and see what they say.
I definitely don't want to be spending money on something that wont last a reasonable amount of time

Find a decent garage, A TU lump is a simple / stone age design, any decent garage will be able to replace the head gasket far cheaper then a Peugeot main dealer.
