lol it has its ups and downs. im looking for another shell now, and im gunna do a total strip down, repaint the shell and build it back up. but that one will be getting modified.

all on a strict budget of course. i dont think ive spent much more than £60 on the miami yet. other than a few more bits to service. and a new drivers seat to find, most of it is just getting my hands dirty.

hoping total spend on doing it up wont exceed £500

well, the weeks been a bit of a duff one for the GTI.

i did manage to get the center console and things back into the car. new gaiter and gear knob. the carbon fiber on the gear stick isnt staying, its just a quick fix for now.

also put the repaired passenger seat in. and test fitted the recaro thats still in one piece to see what the size was like. thoughts?

and i carpeted the side walls of the boot today. so that's the good bit.

and now the bad.. Sad

the replacement wind deflector i got doesn't fit, namely because my sunroof is some weird dealer fitted one off aftermarket jobby and the chances of finding he bits i need are nill ... so that will be removed this week and then ill start making up a plate at work to fill it in. after that it will all be smoothed over.

this has also somewhat changed my plans for the car a bit too, as the list of bits to be painted now spans half the car, ive decided to have a chap at work respray the whole thing. made more sense this way, otherwise ill have several different shades of blue with various finishes at considerable expense. so the new paint job wont be showcar standard, but it will at least be all one shade and all the same finish. mates rates mixed with a sorta 'the paintjob will be as good as i want to pay for' deal.

with that in mind i may yet add my own flair to the interior a bit more in the form of black suede recaros. but we'll see. i best get saving.

i think you've somewhat missed the point in a project.

ecosse is also a 486 mile trip each way. balls to that, and they are majourly expensive. i could pay for a paint job with the cost it would take to get my car to them.

i do car restoration for a living though, so doing 80% of the work myself is the only way to make these kind of projects financially sensible.

i dont want it to be an immaculate paint job though, as i'll loose sleep over it being dinged or scratched. just want it blue and shiny. these cars are meant to be enjoyed.

i gave the car a really good soapy clean today so i could assess the paint work as it stands and its a bit of a mess when you look at it, faded dull worn laquer, little bobbles, some smooth paint, some orange peel. and even a ring mark on the bonnet where someones left their drink on it.

so yea, it deserves another blow over with the spray gun.

some modifications may slip through now aswell. for example, black suede headliner/parcel shelf. i want to re dye the carpet aswell so its proper RED again, not pink. otherwise ill track down a dark grey one in good condition. the seats could also be in for a change, as im tempted to use my recaro seats now, trimmed up to suit. i wasnt going to use them but even the seat i repaired feels a bit 'fragile' when you get in it and out of it.

paid a trip to the new forest while i was having a weekend in hampshire and met a guy called matt from the owners club and swaped him an interior for some tidy little recaro's.

foams all good, so after ive got busy on the machine and recovered them in some nice leather i have laying around, and found something nice for the centres, they'll look the part.

i also started to strip the car down with a mate ready for it's respray.

crappy dealer fitted sunroof is off, ready to be filled it and smoothed over.

tailgate off and started taking the lights out,

rear hatch to be striped and for the wiper arm and washer nipple to be smoothed over.

and glad i spend to long cleaning all this, because now its gotta come out again! but, the red carpets wont be going back in Smile

ill take the tail gate into work this week and do the smoothing and get that rubbed back ready for paint, bit by bit...

ive done the floor pan already, and the inside isnt really getting done, just the insides of the doors.

colour will stay miami blue, but ill make it a splash darker whilst still staying in the same paint code.

(the early ph.1 gti's wer' a lighter shade of blue than the ph.2 so ill go a step darker still.)

im just stripping the interior to make life easier for the painters. and i may blow over the interior with the paint gun at work before it goes to the body shop.

im not going to take the dash out though, just loosen it so i can mask it off properly. and ill waxoil the underside in the summer, will get it up on the ramp at work and do it.

carpets coming out as im gunna put the dark grey one in from a 205 rallye thats coming into my posession in the next week or so. i dont like the red ive decided, faded and pink and is a bit much on a blue car.

the rallye also has a mint origional gear knob and a few bits of mint plastic trim that will also go in the miami as some pillock drilled holes all over my interior for a rubbish alarm system.
