Hi,

I've got a Pegeout 206 1.9d 1999 model.

It was serviced around 2 weeks ago and ever since the car has become more and more sluggish.

THe car starts fine and for a while it was shaking violently at 60mph until revs increased and got nearer 70mph. Then when the cold mornings came it's been so slow until engine got warm.

But now I'm at a point where it's not safe to drive as when pull out of junctions the car just wont speed up. It can eventually get up to 70mph over about 3 miles of driving. Even when parked up the revs dont go up quick enough when press the accelerator.

I've read around forums and lots mention the egr valve? How easy is it to remove this and clean?

Other than this anybody experienced problems like this?

Any replies would be very much appreciated. At my wits end.

It won't be the EGR valve, sounds far more serious than that. Possibly, blown head gasket? The only proper test is a cylinder compression test, but signs could be high oil pressure, oily smell in coolant and low power.

What kind of service did you have? Might be worth taking it back to the garage if it's only occurred since they touched the car.

You could have a fault on the fuel pump or a blocked injector.
Check along the fuel line system for signs of a leak and rule that out first (cheapest and quickest option)
What type of diesel are you using? Cheap diesel doesn't like cold weather. Might be worth putting an additive like redex through the tank just to give it a flush through.

Hi,

Thanks for replies. Had a full service. All filters changed and oil etc. The mechanic coming tonight to have a look at it.

I use shell diesel and tried some red ex to clean it. Doubt would be head gasket as surely the car wouldn't be able to get up to speeds of 70mph, even though it takes an age to get up to this speed.

There is a fair amount of oil covering two of the glow plugs. But no smell of diesel or leaks. But maybe injector or fuel pump causing the problems.

Hopefully mechanic will figure out whats up with it but guessing will be an expensive repair! gutted.

Well off came the egr valve, clogged with loads of crap! Cleaned out. Re fitted. Hey presto now have acceleration and power in the car. Just hope when engine gets cold overnight it's the same in morning!

Well I'm back.

The car has started being very very slow again. (I know it's diesel but this aint normal)

After cleaning the egr valve everything seemed to improve, but the car then started doing it again. Basically have to rev the balls off it to get up to speed. When change gear the car loses a lot of revs and speed actually decreases until revs pick up again. The strange thing is once up to 70mph the acceleration just keeps increasing and car will do 85mph, but hey would take 4 mile to get up to this speed. But if doing 70mph and somebody pulls out and have to slow down, the loss of revs results in speed dropping to 50mph and then takes ages to get back up to speed.

When started again I just thought sod it and got a brand new EGR valve, stuck it on and no change to issues.

If in 1st gear and press the throttle on and off the car would normally kangaroo hop... but nothing just keeps rolling until stops. Beginning to think this is a throttle issue. Anybody else had throttle issues?

Any ideas be much appreciated. Thanks O

Changed my accelerator cable today took me 20mins! What a result car back to normal! The old cable had stretched and basically wasn't opening the butter fly valve enough, resulting in not enough revs causing car to be like a bag of s**t. Gutted got a new egr valve though cost me more than it should of!

hi I have the same model and have had similar experience. after reading a similar thread tried the same fixes, inlet manifold was lined with a tar like gunk before a thorough clean out, and tried to adjust the throttle cable, which has ,for the moment at least restored "normal" acceleration, just out of interest was the cable from a dealer? and what price?

I couldn't just get a cable, they sell you a cable kit which has the outer casing etc which you dont really need. I just used the cable and threaded back through the current casing on the car.

I got my kit from Euro Car parts at £35, I did find on ebay for £19.95 but had to get it ASAP so picked up from my nearest branch.

I'm a complete novice at fixing cars but even I managed to do it.
