A few new issues to share and hopefully someone can help.
The first one is that when the car is in first gear and I pull away (more often when on a slight incline) the gear sounds like it crunches slightly.
Not in a massively grindy way, just like if you tried to pop the car into first when not completely stopped, but maybe not even as bad as that.
It's not clutch clip as revs remain constant and with slip it doesn't usually cause a crunch noise.
Secondly, there is a loud chat chat chat chat chat chat noise from the fan belt area when starting from cold. It soon quietens down but has been very noticeable over the past couple of freezing cold weeks.
Finally when quickly changing from left to right directions (not rallying, just in normal manoeuvres in car parks and other such tight areas) I can feel a clunk through the pedals. I cant hear anything but I can certainly feel it. I have had both top mounts, bearings and lower arms replaced in the past 18 months and this feels completely different to how they felt when failing.
I have noticed the my exhaust is lower and further to the left than it used to be (compared to where it sat centrally in the bumper cut out before)
so I thought maybe as it's off centre and there generally is a bit of movement on the hangers it could be thing banging. I'm getting the exhaust put central again but I'm doubtful is it so I was hoping for suggestions on other possible causes
Any ideas/suggestions guys?

1. change gear box oil
2.check belt condition, / run engine with oult the belt. mine was the ac pump making noise.
3.sticky caliper / warped / loose disk

Now I have been living with what I thought was rattly manifold inner pipes as per a fairly common problem on 138 engines but the sound is remarkably similar from this aux belt area but a hell of a lot louder when cold.
The manifold rattle also originally started as a cold start problem but became constant. Possibly thinking it's not my manifold at all and it's been the aux belt area all along.

i have this had my timing belt and the other bits with it changed but still have the problem rattle drives me insane due to go in garage at end of month if i find the problem will let you know

DRAPER,
Have you had the manifold pipes checked and welded? There are 4 triangular pipes in the larger round one where it connects to the cat and midsection that tend to break their welds and rattle. It's what I thought mine was but I've not found a local garage willing to take it off and mig weld it for me
Also any more pics of you rear spoiler about? Been looking for a fairly subtle one for ages and yours looks spot on. Any ill effects on the roof mechanism and boot opening because of the extra weight?

1) Gearbox oil changed in the summer with oil from pug stealership. been silent and smoother until this very recent issue in the colder weather. I know sometimes changing gearbox oil can cause issues like this as metal shavings drain to the bottom etc. But would have thought the issue would have arose sooner.
2 )Reasonably easy job to remove belt myself? Any good guides about? I'll check out google for some later if not. Aux belt off means no PAS or Aircon right? any other systems affected that would make it unsuitable to test drive without it fitted? The fan is electronically controlled so no worries on that front one would assume.
3)Good thought. Front pads and disc changed less than 18 months ago and car has not had to do any hard breaking of been ragged enough to warrant warped discs, unless there was an inherent fault with the ones fitted. Worth a check along with my exhaust alignment in the morning.
So thanks for the thoughts.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

will take some pics of it for ya tomorrow and no problems opening boots etc its got the lights/indicators built into it best spoiler ive found for the cc
not had the manifold checked properly yet, last time went in garage i did ask them to check but they didnt ;( grrr but its going in again and im gonna stand in the viewing area to make sure they bloody do this time before other jobs lol
the rattle is so annoying and worse when accelerating so i would say its the manifold as exhaust had extra hangers and rubbers installed last time just to eliminate that

Yeah the exhaust hangers (or lack of) have caused my new midsection to crack already. Like you I've asked a couple of garages to have a look but they say they do and it's fine. Typical garage bull though I fear.
Apart form the maniold my whole system is less than a year old. So if it is an exhaust rattle thats the only bit left lol.

Take the belt off, start the engine if the noise is gone you know it's belt, PAS pump, AC pump or alternator problem.

Could be a worn steering rack or the rack bolts might be loose. Do you have big shoes that touch the steering column?

If they are stripping the car just get the manifold welded anyway to make sure it's fixed.

That's great, looks like just the thing we're after. My I ask how much you paid and where you got it from etc. It's it a bolt on job or Tigerseal etc? PM if you don't want to post on this thread.
Slightly off topic I know, so bringing it back.... the aux belt noise is getting worse by the day no so I'm looking at having to replace parts there but I have not idea what bit has gone and how many parts may need replacing.
My exhaust hanger ruber had snapped which is why the exhaust was off centre and sloping slightly. Garage told me it was that causing the knock.
To top it all off it's come to the point where the rear tyres need changing, and I got a front nearside punture on Sunday (side wall) so having to get 4 new shoes for it on saturday. The tyres I want were £135 quid each but getting all 4 fitted for £360 so fairly happy with that... as happy as I can be having to spend 360quid that is!
