I think thats just a part of the original cold air feed, could be wrong tho

Just realised that the pictures don't really show scale - it's not really that big.
Here's another angle with a 2p coin in view:
The round end (facing) in the above picture has lugs that suggest it twists into something to lock into place - dunno what though...

Have you looked under the car and seen if it looks like there's anything missing?

Yep - I had a quick look over and under and unfortunately I can't see anywhere obvious where it might have come from.
I haven't had a detailed look though - just wondered if anyone could identify it straight away as something really obvious.
If it's likely something to do with the cold air intake, from what others have suggested, then I guess a good look over from the right-hand side in and around the air filter is in order.

It's either the air intake, or the battery cooling pipe, both fit by right hand side of the radiator.

Looks like this bit. I know its not a 2.0hdi but the battery area is the same

Thanks - does look similar.
The car's out today but I'll check today or tomorrow around the battery and air filter box - lots of Googling for images based on air intake etc., based on the above, doesn't seem to throw up anything that looks the same...
