Hi Everyone, I have noticed a strange noise - not sure if it is new or old as I only heard it a few days ago when the radio was turned off and not sure if it is strange at all but I can be sure I am not familiar with it. Anyway it appears when I change gear as I press my clutch down - it is a light whirring noise if that is how best to describe it...so as I go through the gear say from 1st to 2nd - whirring - which stops when I release the clutch and so on. The best time I have noticed it is if I am stationary at a traffic light with my foot down on the clutch in first waiting for the lights to change - it sounds louder at this point and a contacnt whirring as I have my foot down on the clutch.
Any advice? I have a Peaugeot 206 GLX 53 plate with 86,000 miles.

It sounds like the clutch release bearing is on it's way out. It's best to replace is as soon as possible as it may last 1000 miles or 10. You're best bet is to replace the whole clutch kit and the clutch cable if you have one. I'll try and find a video which has the sound just so you can make sure it is the clutch release bearing

Thank you for your reply. I have watched the video and it does seem to sound like that when I am holding my foot down on the clutch....for instance if I am in 1st gear but stationary waiting for traffic to move at traffic lights or in a traffic queue - there is noise when I am putting my foot down to change gear (all gears) but no noise when the clutch is released and I am driving normally.
Do you suggest that I book my car into a garage and suggest I sound like I know what I am talking about and mention clutch release bearings. In fact, as you suggest, my car is most probably due a new clutch system as the bite is high too and we are actually on nearly 88,000 miles (I checked last night) - what sort of cost am I looking at? I had the same problem as you a couple of weeks back. I could hear the noise faintly when the clutch pedal was not pressed, but as soon as it pressed it, it became much louder. The fact that you can't hear it whilst the clutch pedal is depressed most likely indicates that it won't fail immediately like mine did.
You could book it in, however I would recommend taking it to a garage and getting a quote first. That way you can show them the noise it makes whilst the clutch is pressed and not have them charge you. It's a cheeky way of confirming the problem. Any decent mechanic would know what the problem is once you demonstrate it.
How many previous owners has the car had? I had one previous lady owner and the clutch was changed at 75000 miles which isn't bad for an original clutch on a petrol. 88,000 miles is good if it was the car's first clutch. It also depends on whether the car is petrol or diesel, as diesel clutches seem to last much longer than their petrol equivalents.
I paid £290 to have a new clutch kit fitted along with a clutch cable. However I provided the garage with the clutch cable. It's about a 4-6 hour job depending on the car. It's best to get quotes from different garages as one garage quoted me £500! Do you know if you have a cable operated clutch or hydraulic operated clutch? I'd be more than happy to answer any further questions you may have mate.

I am afraid I do not have a clue as to what kind of clutch the car has. It is a petrol engine and I have had the car over 6 years now and it has never had a new clutch during my ownership. Prior to me (I bought the car at 51,000 miles) I think there had been 1 or maybe 2 owners. I think I will go with your suggestion and perhaps take the car to a garage first and act innocent regarding the noise and see what they say - then when I am sure I will a few quotes.
I use the car to travel to the train station and back 5 days a week - the train station is 10 minutes away - wil the car be okay for a few days as I will not be able to visit any garages until Saturday earliest. Thanks for all your advice N

It may be a cable clutch operated but I'm not 100% sure to be honest with you mate. Hopefully someone will know how to tell if it is a cable or hydraulic operated clutch. If you could state the year of the car along with the engine size it'll make it easier to find more information on it. Since you bought the car with 51,000 you most likely have the original clutch.
I personally think the car should be ok till the weekend as you're not hearing the noise whilst the clutch pedal is not pressed. In the meantime, try not to keep the clutch in at lights on junctions as it'll only make the problem worse. I used to do this too and it has been a hard habit to change, but its one that will prolong the life of your clutch and release bearing. Glad I could help mate. Keep us updated on how it goes.

Hi David, Yes you were correct as it was indeed the clutch. I took it to the garage on Thursday and it was repaired and ready to collect on Friday - for the grand total of £265 plus VAT (ouch). But to be fair my car has never had any major work just a tyre and an exhaust part here and there - oh and brakes...so it has served me well over the years and worth the expense. The noise has completely gone both the strange noise when going up through the gears and when the clutch is pressed down and held.
I have another problemo which you may be able to help with. My ABS light comes on intermittently - it can be off for long periods and doesn't come on when I use the breaks but after I have gone over a sleeping policeman or humps - not all the time (especially if I drive very carefully over the humps). I did take the car to ATS and he said the brakes were fine and turned the light off - he tried to read the management system but there were a few old codes on there - I will take it back to be read again but would like a heads up before they start changing my ABS system...
