The other morning driving into work, I took a roundabout as I normally do.. but lost control of the car and ended up doing a 180 turn!
Now it was a little on the damp side and it's never been a problem before but since then I've noticed that any form of steering to the right feels really loose - like there is ice under the tyres! Even at low speed! There's no problem with when steering to the opposite side.
Tyres are in good nick, nothing obviously wrong with them and there's no obvious knocks or rattles - except for the wheel bearings which are starting to be a bit noisy. I'm guessing it can't be those causing the problem - anyone got any ideas what I should take a look at, to find out what's going on?

Have you checked the rear suspension and beam??

Have you checked the tyre pressure as well as the tyre condition?

Does it feel loose at the front or the back? I skidded on some diesel spilt on a roundabout once. Had full opposite lock on just to prevent the spin. Took about a week for my tyres to feel anywhere near right again, but the rear never felt the same until I changed tyres. think they twisted slightly from the sideways movement.

Id say it could be your rear beam that could be the problem ive seen that happen on a few cars that friends of mine have had. until you have a good look at it id just take it easy

Thanks, I've had a look and can't see anything obvious - but will take a closer look when we can get it up in the air.

Yup, tyre pressure is fine.

Beginning to think it can only be this, but again until the car is in the air I can't get a decent enough look around it. Checked for play as best we could and there's no give at all.

It definately feels as if it's the front not the back, I'm not even pushing the car and it feels like it's over-steering quite badly when turning right, at anything above 25 MPH at the moment!

That's pretty much what I am doing!
Thanks for the replies guys - given up trying to diagnose it on my own as I'm limited on what I can do at this point (can't get a jack underneath it to get it up! oi oi!) - so I've got it booked in at my mate's garage Thursday for both it's MOT (as it's due shortly) and to take a look at the problem/change the bearings.
Hopefully it's just the bearings, but I've also seen elsewhere it could be bush related/wishbones - although with no apparent play this seems unlikely.
I'll update this after Thursday once my mate has had a good look around!

Well, the mystery deepens!
No sign of problems with the bearings and the rear beam is fine.
Mate checked the compensators too (as they can seize up easily).
No play anywhere as earlier suggested, no problems with wishbones or bushes.
What we did find is that the rear alloy was dented (another f#@%! one - going through one a year at the moment), so that and the resulting mis-shapen tyre could account for the wheel bearing like noise.
So we're thinking the only thing that could be left, is to get the tracking done.

I'd say check the tracking bud, mine went like this not long back, a re-track sorted it out =]
