1) Thank you for the advice. It is a VERY quiet engine so tappets should be good. Though possibly closed up (is that why it is so quiet?) so I will give it a go.
2) Thank you for being so understanding.
3) Her mother is an Alfaholic, her brother is an Alfaholic, I am an Alfaholic. She loves them but couldn't find one that was different enough to her brothers or insurable so a 206 it was. Nice car though.
Finally, it also seems a bit low on power and I have fully serviced it. In comparison her brothers old (104,000 mile) 55bp 1.4 8V Corsa was quicker. Previous owner of the 206 had the belt changed by a mate so I suspect cambelt timing may be out so will work up the energy and funds to deal with that in a few months. |
Regarding the cambelt, I wouldn't think timing is out.
I assumed everything else is properly sorted with you being a mechanic, and even if the engine
does not sound 'tappety', it makes a huge difference in power and economy if they're properly re-adjusted.
Usually they close-up as you said with this engine, although it isn't a particullarly pokey lump anyway.
I would strongly recomend adjusting every 25.000 miles (-once settled-) for the TU3, the rest I don't know about as many of them have hydraulic lifters and therefore don't need it.

Got to agree with the majority of this thread. Mines never really had an issue. If it has it has been my fault in some way (snapping a part of the turbo) or general wear and tear (exhaust/brakes).
However saying that, my EML is having a fun time ATM (TPS Sensor), but to me an 11year old car with nearly 100k on the clock. Some of the original sensors are going to give up at some point.
I'm happy with it. Took the time when searching for it, looked at loads of examples and didn't rush into buying the first half decent looking one. Nor snapped up the cheapest as it was a 'bargain'.
Out of the 5previous owners it has had I've been the owner who's put on the majority of the milesand in that time, I'd like to think I've looked after it (most of the time), it has parts replaced when it needs it, it has a service every 6months-1year and isn't ragged everywhere. In return I'm rewarded with a car which never really let's me down.

Mines so bad, I'm actually thinking of selling it now because I'm sick of spending money fixing the thing. Every time I fix one thing, something else seems to brake. Never had this problem with my old Corsa.
