Hi all,

apologies if this is a ridiculously simple question but I can't find my handbook. Does anyone know what coolant I should buy for a 2001 Y reg 206 GLX 1.6

Thanks

J

Is it just for topping up OR are you flushing the system out & replacing all the coolant?

If its a full flush out then go for a long life / 5 year coolant.

Get Pug coolant only.
I hear some long-life stuff (RED) wrecks the vains of the engine and can spoil seals/gasket.

Pug is long-life 5 year but is light-green/blue.

It goes to show that colour does not determine 2 or 5 year service cycle.

Antifreeze needs to be OAT type for the 206.

Correct.

This is what causes confusion because people always think of OAT as red colour,
whereas pug OEM is OAT and is bluish green.

People shouldnt go by the colour, they should read the bottle for the spec Whistle...

Mines got long life orange OAT stuff in as I changed it the other week when I did the water pump.

i think i have said that before.

all those fancy color are all artificially added. All engine coolant (whether is OAT or silicate/phosphate) are colorless by nature.

It basically protects the aluminium used in the engine.

Stick a non OAT coolant in & after a while it will damage the engine internals & then spring a leak from one of the seals.

OAT = Organic Acid Technology

Phew. Thank god for that. Nearly had a cold sweat tho. Didn't see it on the label until I peeled it open and read inside.

right, basically most engine coolant nowadays are all glycol (propylene or ethylene, some even use glycerol) and water.

In order to prevent corrosive, rust inhibitor must be added.

traditional phosphate or silicate (inorganic inhibitor) are good for cast iron engine but not so good for aluminum due to their slightly alkaline nature.

OAT stands for organic "organic acid technology"; normally they use triazine analogue as the rust inhibitor, due to the acidic nature they are fine to use with aluminum and ferrous metal but not so good with copper or lead.

depends on the exact formula of the rust inhibitor they will have different tolerances to rubber seal.
